Rise of Kings is a revolutionary total conversion modification for Rise of Nations: Thrones and Patriots that recreates the Medieval era. Set across 3 ages and with 24 factions to choose from, this is one of the largest and most ambitious mods for Rise of Nations.
Unlike other Catholic factions (that is if Armenia could be considered a Catholic faction at all) the Norse do not train cavalry from the Nobles' Court. Instead, the role of Order Knights (and their command functions) are taken over by a group of nobles called the Stormenn, who share the same stats, but fight as heavy infantry instead. However, Stormenn are armed with axes and warhammers, and so don't have the splash attack of polearms or the long reach of long spears. Stormenn are a good component to add to bolster the strength of Norse land armies as long as your opponents do not bring out guns.
Simple question: why not Huscarl!?
Hello,
The reason is that Rise of Kings takes place in an era where housecarles are either extinct or replaced into different units. The Dark Age Feudal Retinue of many Germanic European factions is meant to represent the housecarles as well as other units similar to them, like the Anglo-Saxon thegn - the Norse of Rise of Kings are actually the Norse in the 10th century: increasingly fractured, disunited and easy prey for other people, especially the HRE and the English - Danelaw was wiped out by 1100CE, Hansa even caused Denmark to nearly self-destruct. Other factions have to make do with militia. Stormenn are also not huskarlar (the term means "house-boy" or "slave", like the Islamic ghilman), but independent warlords by their own right.
Just to add on to what Beelim has written, the Norse can already train Hirdmenn, who are very similar to the Huscarls, except they are available in the Castle Age rather than the Dark Age. So there wouldn't be much point adding Huscarls as well.
Oh thanks for the history :P
Would you be able to return the favour for Vietnamese post-mediaeval military history? ;)
Obviously! How can I tribute and what do you want :)?
Oh and Happy New Year!
Just do research for us on Mac, Tay Son and Nguyen forces of c1600-1900. Roughly put, we are interested in the following units for Vietnam:
- infantry
- cavalry (if applicable)
- artillery
Stuff which could be of use:
- How did Early Modern Vietnam obtain gunpowder weapons?
- What were the relations between the Vietnamese, Siam and China like?
- Did Vietnamese soldiers serve in Siam and China?
- Did the Vietnamese recruit auxiliary units from Siam or China? what special weapons did Vietnam obtain?
- and (since I am Chinese) what was the status of Chinese migrants to Dai Viet - if any? could they be used as mercenaries?
OK then.
Just as a side note, Armenia could certainly be considered Catholic. The Armenians and Assyrians were quite infamous for being Christian despite surrounding nations being Islamic or Jewish. Also, the Armenian side of my family (as far back as my ancestry goes)have been very Catholic, not that speaks for Armenian history.
Yeah, we know. Armenia is a bit tech-backward but is capable of using both Chivalric Order units and Imperial Mandate structures.
