Vortex Quake 2 is an Action-RPG for Quake 2! The first playable version of it was release in 1999 and here we are, still going strong!
Kill players and monsters for experience to earn levels. Every level you recieve ability and weapon points. Use points to get unique abilities and upgrade your weapons! Become a tank, spawn monsters to fight for you, or deploy devices to aid you in battle! With 11 classes and 100+ abilities, there is NEVER a dull moment in Vortex!

If you came here wondering why there hasn't been an update in... forever, I'll explain. Before version 4.3, there was a lot of demand from the community that I add new content. The main problem is that major updates obviously take time. I spent at least a hundred hours of development time creating and testing/debugging the new content. When 4.3 was finally released, everyone was happy to try it out, but then criticism came. I worked on minor updates to address these concerns as best I could, but--inexplicably--almost the entire player-base disappeared overnight. To say it was disheartening is an understatement. I always promised that I would work on Vortex as long as I had players, but when everyone left, I saw little reason to stick around.
Flash forward to today. My player-base is still gone. I've been busy with work/"Real Life"(tm), but I thought I would throw out one last update. An old-time player called version 4.3 "Sporetex" because spores were overpowered. This update will hopefully correct that (and a few other things).

** Reduced obstacle addon health to 150 (from 250)
** Reduced maximum spore count to 3 (from 4)
** Reduced spore addon health to 10 (from 20)
** Reduced spore addon damage to 15 (from 25)
** Fixed divide by zero bug in vrxinfo menu (hit percent and frag percent)

The idea is to allow all Vortex players to communicate in real-time to help organize games. It wasn't practical when we had hundreds of players, but with such a small player base it might be the only way to avoid playing alone. I have joined the list and I ask you to do the same. It would also help if you try to find at least one other person in your gaming group to try Vortex. They can download the whole game and comprehensive guides in just a few clicks. Please help Vortex by restoring our player base! Thanks for your support.

This is the base to the hl2 version modular combat so this is practicly a Future version of that
How am I supposed to play if it won't show any servers or let me play?
the server ip is vrx.dyndns.org
The server may have been down when you tried to connect. Once you've started Quake 2/R1Q2, type 'connect vrx.dyndns.org:27910' in the console.
I noticed that the full client download is gone. That's odd, because there's no legal reason to delete it (it's just the Quake 2 demo + R1Q2 + Vortex files). Anyway, you can still get it here: 003ecae.netsolhost.com
You can also play on my server (UK), the IP is "dx4.game-host.org:27910".
I am hoping to edit some things in the game and also there will be many new Vortex maps arriving on my server.

Note: the character files are NOT the same as GHz's - you will have to make new characters when you join my server.

Defiantly going to try this Mod out, because from the looks it's pretty cool.
this is awsome and easy to load go to google and type in vortex wiki ghz and look for the main page download all the stuff and read the readme's and get to playing it its fucking awsome
help! i finished dl the mod and its still the ol quake 2. the mod wont load.
Vortex is a multi-player mod: You need to connect to a server to play. If you have downloaded the full game install, you can just double-click the batch file 'PLAY VORTEX QUAKE 2' to start playing (it should automatically connect you to our server). If that doesn't work, manually connect to vrx.dyndns.org:27910 (type: 'connect vrx.dyndns.org:27910'). HTH!
