Long ago, when the word 'Hiigara' rang only as a hollow dream, the kiith of Kharak never imagined they would walk the Path to Victory. But, when they reclaimed their Homeworld and proclaimed themselves 'Hiigaran', they believed they had reached their goal. How wrong they were. 150 years after Hiigaran landfall, conflict rages across the Galaxy... Path to Victory is a multiplayer and skirmish mod for Homeworld 2 that adds new units to both Vaygr and Hiigaran Races as well as enabling the Keepers, Raiders and Kadeshi as playable races.

Meh, more stuff I have to micromanage.

I was thinking of making them permanant but wasn't sure on it (exactly because of the micromanagement aspect). I guess the best thing would be if they just went on when the gunships went into combat.

Ya don't 'have to' do anything, H_D :P
The choice is there...

No, because the defense fields wouldn't have been added unless the gunships couldn't survive without them... so yes I would 'have to' do something (like micromanage them). If survavability is the problem, I would rather they just have more armor.

Or I suppose the idea might have been something like tell all ships to activate their defense fields at the start of a fight... which I suppose is acceptable. I guess I'm just not a fan of the defense field -concept or appearence- and its use on such a small ship. Ignore me if you want, but that's my opinion.

Ha, it's all just opinion H_D, and I am talking from ignorance here; I don't have PtV installed so I don't really know how they work.

Well it's less survivability as to give you a reason to choose them over heavy gunships. The defense bubbles adds something unique that no other corvette class ship has (save the keepers but ignore them for now).

I think I'll make it a permanant effect though. Probably makes most sense, less to manage.

never really saw the point of having the defense field lol swear it doesn't block anything thats actually worth blocking, since theres no formation system in homeworld 2 the frigates are just annoying to get into place :P

Prototype versions of the bubbles even came with disco lights. Sadly S'jet didn't like that effect and forced the engineers to build blue bubbles only.

i thought they did stop all types of weapons but its more of a percentage that was stopped like a 1 out of every 3 shots from a kinetic turret gets through. i think energy weapons and ion cannons had a higher chance of getting through. id go more with how the sentinels shield in cataclysm worked. it stopped most weapons fire and dropped after x amount of damage. some still got through and if the ship survived even if the shield dropped it would come back up after a certain amount of time

Yeah it does stop a percentage and I really can't change anything about that. It's just the way the HW2 engine works.

Wish it could be different but for that I'd need other systems I don't really want to fiddle around with.

(Arguments on how whether such a system, even miniaturized, is appropriate for Corvette-class craft aside); I like the 'cuteness' of the bubbles :)
My mate has a rotary vehicle he calls Bubble, and this pic just made me smile, thinking of him somehow cruising around space in his ported-rotary, blasting bad guys...
That probably sounds pretty weird...
ok it is. :P

why would it not be appropriate? i mean in Star Wars a good number of the fighters are smaller then the corvettes here and still have shields.

..aaand that's Star Wars; an entirely different Universe, with different rules and tech. This is HW2.
I said 'arguments aside' because I didn't want to start just this argument, so I'm stopping there.

The argument is really actually quite valid. I explain it away by saying: PTV is 50-100 years (can never remember correctly) after HW2. Technology HAS changed (take the F18in the US Air Force - it's changed a lot since it was first introduced as internal systems are changed and brought up to date).

I'm keeping as much as I can true to the hw2 storyline etc. but some fun things just pop out a little which means I just throw the 'time has passed' argument out.

same with the C130. that came out in vietnam and is still being used just with updated controls and some other stuff.

My thought on it is that the smaller bubble would require less power, more efficient unit means it can stay running... or something.

i was thinking kinda like the shields health was maybe half the ships health and it would be on all the time and still only stop a portion of damage and go down once it takes to much damage. though im not sure about regeneration type stuff. maybe after 30 seconds of no damage taken at all or in a no combat situation it comes back up?

That would be virtually impossible to script as the corvettes come in squadrons. It would be nice but probably not possible in the HW2 engine as is when using squads.

I'd be better off just using auto-activate when under fire or a perma-shield.

Quite honeslty though, it's a tiny little thing you'll barely notice in a big battle. As long as it's automated somehow I can't believe the exact mechanics will make much of a difference.

i dont remember exactly but i believe they had the exact setup im thinking in the star wars warlords mod. I know they definitly had it on the single ships but im not sure about the corvettes and fighters i think they did but not certain

Description

Advances in Defense Field technology now allows Hiigaran Gunships to protect themseves with miniature defense fields known as Defense Bubbles. Identical to the large scale defense fields used by larger ships, Defense Bubbles will absorb most* incoming fire.

Like defense fields, defense bubbles must be manually activated for individual squadrons.

*The reality is most weapons aren't stopped by Defense Fields but which upstanding Hiigaran Citizen will admit that?
