ORION - MEDIA WEEK

DAY 1 / WEEK 1

Another day, another update!

We have been constantly improving on Beta 1.2 and having playtests regularly to ensure that the build is not only stable, but as much fun as it can possibly be.

This last weekend we had invited various media outlets.  We invited them to simply play the game and if they would like to write a hands-on preview we would supply some exclusive media for them.  It appears most of them are writing hands on preview and it appears there was a hell of a lot of media that was taken from these events and there is too much of it so we are going to share it all with you.

MEDIA OUTLETS INVITED:

-PlanetHalfLife.com
-FilePlanet
-IGN
-HLFallout
-HalfLife2.net

PODCAST 17 & ORION - BACK AGAIN

We are going to have a game session with Podcast 17 later this week.  As most of you remember, we had some early playtests with them back in December and November of 2009.  They were one of the few that played Orion before it was originally released, played it after release, and will also have the opportunity to play the huge new patch and give their thoughts!  We'll post more details about this as it gets closer.

For now, enjoy the media:

Keep your eye on HalfLife2.net (www.halflife2.net) tomorrow. They will be posting their hands on impressions with the latest build of Beta 1.2

We have a few things left on our to-do list for the public release of Beta 1.2 - but don't fear - we are extremely close. Keep your eye on this page for all things Orion!

This is true. We've had jetpacks announced with our game since August 2000. Jetpacks have been in the game design since the first prototype all the way back when the game was called 'Incoming' and being built on the GoldSRC engine.

I didn't bury your comment. I welcome all forms of criticism... but I really think you should try the new Beta 1.2 (gameplay aspects) before really knocking it.

However, that is entirely up to you.

If you bothered to play the mod before judging it you'd know that the only similarities to Halo are aesthetic and minute, and have nothing to do with gameplay. Of course, Halo players obviously don't give a **** about gameplay...

definitely inspired by halo, there is no denying that. Still the TC has its own universe, and its own gameplay style. Wish they stuck with their original idea of keeping the dino's around

If you can relate the human model to Halo, you can relate Starcraft to Halo, you can relate storm troopers from Star Wars to Halo, you can relate ******* paintball gear to Halo.

Halo "spartans" is just an ultra-generic futuristic space-suit.

You can only change space armor so much.

Games like Turok (new one), Quake, Unreal, Star Craft, etc all have similar space suits.

They are all very similar, as is our game. Can't really argue it nor do I think it's worth the time to truly defend that argument, as it's valid for a lot of IP's.

UnknownTarget May 10 2010, 5:43pm says:

I'm actually gonna echo the criticisms here and also chime in that this game has always struck me as essentially Halo + Counter strike. The only main difference that I've seen is that you guys have jet packs; other than that it's humans in power armor (that do look a lot like Master Chief's - Starcraft, Unreal, Quake, etc, do manage to NOT look like Halo, at least not to the point that this game does), fighting aliens in slightly less power armor. Looks basically like Covenant vs humanity.

The gunplay itself is also strongly reminiscent of Counter-Strike from what I've seen - not a whole lot of change up from it other than the jetpack; and half of the vids I've seen are mostly fighting in corridors, where that jetpack doesn't really come into play. Even small things look copied from Halo; like when you grab the flag, instead of putting it on your back or something else, you carry it in your arms and remove your weapon. It's a good gameplay idea, yea, but it's right outta Halo, and is not helped by the fact that your assets look SO similar to that game.

That all being said, I wouldn't pay for this game, but as a mod it's a great piece of work, it's of very high quality for an indie game. But if it were for pay I would say no, as it seems to just be borrowing too much from other games to make it worth a price of admission. Not that you guys have any intention to sell, I'm just using that as a yardstick of quality.

From what I remember of the first BETA the Jatpack was quite handy in corridors, mostly because many of the levels have been designed with verticality in mind meaning there was often a hole in the cealing up to another level just around the corner.

Praz May 10 2010, 6:26pm says:

We appreciate your words about the free multiplayer beta, however it is only a fraction of the game. Literally. It doesn't even have alien weapons, jetpack particle effects, only has 1 game mode, which isn't even one of our custom designed ones, missing multiple player classes, and only features about 1/3 of what will be available for the human weaponry.

When all is said and done, I think many will realize how very different Orion is in it's own right. Time will tell ;)

How can something be Halo inspired when Halo is an amalgamation of all 80's sci-fi/horror and action movies?

Wouldn't this just be inspired by Halo along with what Halo itself is inspired by? Aliens, Starship troopers, Robocop, **** like that?

All these comparisons really just come from the generation that never paid these things any mind. I'm ashamed to be a part of said generation.
Anyway, this is a great ******* mod. This and Black mesa are the best looking Source mod's I've ever seen.
