The Berlin is an old ship, dating back to the first contact war, but old doesn't mean obsolete. The Berlin is strong, reliable, and can handle itself in a fight. What's more, when faced with inevitable destruction the Berlin can launch enough escape pods, each flanked by flak barrier cannons, to save the entirety of the crew and then some.
