A Halo mod for the critically acclaimed Sins of a Solar Empire, that aims to capture the fast paced intensity of the Halo series.
I bet you were expecting a new ship eh?
Per the most recent edition of the Canon Fodder blog, 343 has disregarded the name fans have used for the destroyer since before 343 was in charge of the Halo franchise.
As you can imagine, many of us are not happy about this, but looking at the long term picture it's better to just change the name and move on to more important issues.
Thanatos no more, here is your Halberd-class Destroyer.
for a brick he flew pretty good! is the only thing i think of when i see UNSC Ships
You will be missed
*Sniff* ='(
(buried)
For a brick, it flew pretty good!
Nice thing about Real Life is I can say this:
Halberd? I only see a Thanatos there.
(I have negative desire to imply this is something that should be argued about. No one can force anyone to call it a Thanatos OR a Halberd, so simply accept that both are now true and roll with it. I, for one, obviously prefer Thanatos.)
...
Actually dude, you are sadly incorrect, it is confirmed by 343 that this class of destroyer (the same class as the Heart of Midlothian) is called the Halberd class. If you don't believe me I can link you the Q&A that stats this.
You misunderstand what I said.
I did not deny that the official name is now Halberd. Rather, I said that we (the fans in general) can keep calling it Thanatos if we want and there is nothing 343 can do about it.
It'd still be a continuity error and another headache the devs of SOTP.
Not at all. Many, many things have multiple names.
The A-10 Thunderbolt II, to use as an example, can be called its full name, A10, Thunderbolt, Warthog, or Hog, and all will be recognized as the same thing. It's perfectly normal.
Of course, as SoTP have indicated, they will formally call this ship the Halberd now to keep in line with canon, but they can still informally refer to it as the Thanatos and be understood without issue by their fans. New fans will have a short adjustment period as they connect "Thanatos" with "Halberd", but then they will have no trouble recognizing what someone means when they say Thanatos.
Ok, I'm fine with the devs using Thanatos as a nickname. Honestly it isn't that big of a deal.
That's kinda stupid, but whatever 343i, disregard the community some more while you're at it... Oh, right, that 11% thing.
We've said as much to the 343 employee who announced it.
We obviously feel they made a poor decision. It's likely they're so out of touch with the community they didn't even know there was a common name for it. Regardless, it would be a major headache for us to try to fight it, probably ruin any goodwill we might have with 343, and we don't need yet another thing we have to explain to every new fan like we have to with the CSO shitbox.
Its just as bad as Disney killing STar Wars EU.
One thing I hate about companies that "take over" other companies that gave them rights is that they clearly do not listen to the fan base and always seem to **** all over what many people like and consider canon every single damn time. But thats how you ruin things that you assume you have power over. Instead of listening to the people you just do what ever the bloody hell you want without considerations from the fan base.
Totally agreed. It's absolutely redundant to rename the ship to a new classification, but it's not worth fighting over... Even though it makes no sense at all.
UNSC Navy Ships are name designated [Most commonly] under Greek Mythological characters, and places. Their strike craft are usually named after swords.
I just don't understand how they missed that. What a prime moment to affirm to your community "Yes, you're right, we like your ideas!", but instead they just completely disregarded it.
You've hit the nail on the head, Idios.
Does a lot of community really call it that name? Or just one or two mods.
Even then, I remember something like it would be a huge hassle if they took a fan created thing and made it canon, so there is that point as well.
Annoying? Kinda. But they are the owners of it. We aren't.
The SOTP devs can always make some type of reference though. Maybe a Thanatos class destroyer as a capship? :P
that's a good idea. Besides the name for any classes that aren't confirmed to be that name should simply be regarded as they are, fan made names, it is up to 343 and now Spartan to what ships classes are called what.
"I recognise that 343 has made a decision, but given that it's a stupid *** decision I've elected to ignore it"
*does f+r in string file*
Its a shame the Halberd isn't a capital ship because if it was you could use Thanatos as one of its possible names, to honor its old name.
so if i understand they just named the ship diffrent and did nothing else to it ?
I thought some people called it the Midlothian-class! I decided to go check the Halo wikia to see what other things have changed. Looks like they have three new ships, for the UNSC, but no pages for them. The Hillsborough-class, the Epoch Heavy Carrier, and the Orion-class.
There's also this weird thing. Halo.wikia.com Since it says it wasn't in Halo 4, I'm going to pretend it doesn't exist. I mean look at it, it doesn't even look like a UNSC ship!
I'm not sure I understand you correctly here, are you saying the "vindication"(Is that the correct name now?) wasn't in halo 4?
It was in Halo 4. It says on the page it wasn't in the "Visual guide". Which is basically an art book explaining the design process.
I believe the epoch is going to be in some sort of board game but according to Unikraken its pretty much a variant in design of what we know as the Athens (which was in a comic book I believe.).
I think 343 does a lot to reintegrate story lines previously abandoned (The whole spirit of fire thing). I just think they dropped the ball here a bit.
Its called advancing. They aren't going to stay with big bulky things like the Charon and such. I personally love the looks of the Vindication and Poseidon. The Vindi can be seen in the last mission orbiting the Mantle.
Not to be a 343 super-defender and please correct me if I'm wrong, but I though people usually referred to this ship as a "Midlothian class" or just destroyer since there was no canon name for it until recently? I know SOTP and HHF had this as the Thanatos class but outside of those mods i wasn't aware it was generally agreed to call it Thanatos in the fan base, (Although Thanatos is for sure a much cooler sounding name).
Some called it Thanatos some Midlothian.
It's always Thanatos for me. Glad I bailed out of Halo right before it came into 343's hands. Halo games only exist up to Reach for me...
I love you Aliah, i cannot express it enough.
Completely agreed.
geez people left and right calling non canon....
starwars disney, expanded.
gearbox homeworld, cata
343 ship name, not original ship name
its just like why? why does it matter what happend in the expanded universe was canon or not? other than the ones that dealt with the main character there are a million other ways the other shouldnt have just been non canon its not like it screwd with what they where doing in the movies at all..
why is cataclysm not canon? in homeworld 2 they even mention a race in decline sorta harking back to cata being the races exodus from the galaxy to get away from the main force at play...
why change the ship name? theres no way at all that effects actual gameplay and it has a less than 1% effect on story...
i would understand if its something major but none of these changes for the most part delt with the characters in the main stories so theres no reason for them not to be canon...
It's like renaming Korriban to... Can't even say it. :(
personally i would leave it as thanatos in the mods. good voice overs already done and it sounds cooler. keep it the way it is now.
As much as I love canon, I can´t but disagree with the name change; Thanatos does sounds a lot more better.
Not to start a shitstorm, but, you guys do all know that 343's upper portion is made up of the people important to Halo like Frank O'connor, or central figures from the Halo community, right?
This is one of the reasons it's so puzzling to me that they're missing the mark so often these days.
Anyone else look in their update feed, saw Halberd Class Destroyer and think "oh yay new destroyer!" Only to be told they're changing the name to something less cool?
so now because 343 changed it name its cannon ?
Yes because they control halo. Also the mod team is only changing it in order to avoid new fans asking "WHY U HAV HALBARD BE CALED THANATOTOS?!!!" Like with the CSO question.
To be honest I dont care how its called, for me its the same ship,I just dont get why you people make such a drama about such irrelevant thing like ships class name...
Personally, I really like the name change. The name Halberd conjures up images of a deadly efficient and multi-purpose weapon of war, all due to it's knightly namesake. I was pretty upset at the Halo 4 debacle, but after playing the Halo 5 beta I'm willing to give 343i the benefit of the doubt on this.
I think you need more russian voices for UNSC captains )
-Vessel 1234, you ordered to engage target Z-35.
-Da (Russian meaning of "Yes") :D
