Excessive Unreal 2 is one of the most chaotic, stupid, hilarious, and insane mods ever made for Unreal Tournament, and it has incredibly well-balanced, action-packed gameplay. It is set in Hell on Na Pali, and is completely over-the-top with absurdly powerful weapons and giant hordes of a huge variety of enemies. It's Unreal like you've never seen it before.

If you like Serious Sam, Doom, and Unreal - especially when blended together in the most absurd (yet somehow perfect) way - this mod is for you. You can download it here on ModDB or from links provided on the EXU2 Forums. Head there for further details!

Originally, EXU was a retake of Unreal's singleplayer campaign using a variety of crazy monsters and the Excessive UT arsenal, hence the name. Now, though, there's EXU2, which is bigger and better in every possible way.

EXU2: Batshit Insane, the singleplayer map pack, is built with EXU2's ridiculous weapons and monsters, and is set in dramatically-modified Unreal maps (plus a few new ones). Open Beta currently ships with the first SIXTEEN playable maps and an intro map! You'll tear through hordes of wildly varied enemies with weapons as diverse as they are devastating.

And if that's not enough, you can also use EXU2's plethora of weapons, items, and enemies in multiplayer games or botmatches using any combination of EXU2's mutators. Turn any game into an Excessive discord spree by swapping Unreal or UT guns with EXU2's, adding monsters, and other fun stuff!

Open Beta? Wait, what?


This mod is currently in Open Beta mode, which means that while it is fully playable and released, it is not finished! Beta means beta. A lot of bugs remain, along with things that need to be polished / fixed / completed. But this gives you an opportunity to contribute! You can report any bugs or problems you encounter, especially issues with gameplay, and post about them in each version's release thread, which will always be a sticky near the top in the forum.

You are also highly encouraged to make your own EXU2 levels and content if you feel so inclined! Post a thread for your content on the forums and I'll support it as best as I can. Do keep in mind, though, that Open Beta assets will be updated frequently, so gameplay and technical balance may shift from patch to patch. I will try to be as transparent about changes as possible so you know what to expect.

So if you download EXU2 Open Beta, feel free to help me smooth it out by messing around and pointing out the rough patches!

EXU2 Patch Time again. Got a bunch of nice tweaks done for this, as well as some pretty big bug fixes. Plus a few extras!

Open Beta Version 5.03:

Campaign Changes:

  • Hellcastle (Menu Map):
    Added selectable navigation beacons leading to difficulty selector rooms for anyone having trouble finding their way to their chosen difficulty portal.
  • Soul Storage (Map 4):
    Fixed door at end of map not opening properly most of the time.
  • Other Maps (1, 6):
    Yet again, misc. technical fixes and tweaks.

Other changes:

  • Improved Pentapower display on the HUD, plus some offset fixes.
  • All monsters with the Fearless tag no longer run away from you when you have the Extractor selected.
  • PulseSkyTentacle aim error tripled.
  • EXULeglessKrall now fully functional (mostly; slight collision bug remains. EXULeglessKrall collision cylinders are higher than they should be, but for now this is a worthy compromise as they would sink into the floor instead).
  • All Demon pawns, Dark Pupae, and Doom Troopers now have glow-in-the-dark eyes.
  • Fixed a HUD bug where icons would start getting duplicated if you carried more than 20 different kinds of selectable inventory items. You can now carry 100 different kinds before that happens, which means every single item in EXU2 plus a dozen or so custom ones. And if a level designer puts over 100 items into a single map, well, they're just crazy!
  • Fixed EXUSeeds bug where activating one would switch you to your next item automatically, even if you still had seeds left.
  • Fixed a bug where no EXUManta classes would attack you on Easy. This behavior is actually intentional from Unreal 1, and is preserved in EXUManta, but TurboManta and below will now attack properly. I also disabled the 40% health reduction for TurboMantas. This should make most Mantas actually dangerous on Easy instead of completely worthless.
  • Fixed EXUFlickeryPulseryThing classes not working online. Also, FaderPanels are now RandoPanel subclasses, and FaderPanels support flickering. They do not work with pulsing settings, though. FaderPanels can also be set to change their texture each time they are triggered back on after being turned off.

Still alive. As far as I know, Waffnuffly is essentially going to finish helping one of his partners-in-crime complete some substantial non-campaign mapping, and make alterations to campaign maps based on new functionality and optimizations. And from what I've come to understand completely remove dependencies on OldSkool, a potentially long-term task. He might wait until that last step is done before releasing another beta.

But yeah, it's definitely still alive.

Follow the banners. Difficulty 1 (Easy) = only one glyph on the banner, Difficulty 2 (Medium) = two glyphs, etc!

For the next patch I'm probably gonna have a wee bit more text identifying each banner, though, right at the start, so it's less difficult to figure out which leads to which. And stuff. Things. My apologies!

Also went ahead and marked this mod as released when Open Beta first launched, even though it's not complete. It is close enough to done that while the campaign has a lot of work left to do, the gameplay itself is quite polished. When the FINAL release hits, though, I will change the date!

Too lazy to submit an official news post at the moment. I've sure got my work cut out for me cleaning up this page once Open Beta launches!
