Well, the first Nod mission is in the north of Africa, so somewhat less-dark people can be expected there. The guy in these icons does look quite a bit more white than your average Lybian or Egyptian, though.
The minigunner is for some reason holding a LMG, that does not seem correct.
It is something that I did find bizarre with the original game. The original icon showed a solder with what appeared to be an AR-15 type weapon. The new image was a bit of a compromise on the issue. I had originally debated on renaming them to "Rifle Infantry" or "Light Infantry" like in TS or RA1. Vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net
It's actually not an AR-15, It's a Calico M960.
