Water Effects



We at team GEAR felt that the only thing that would properly show off our new engine effects is a video. So, we recorded a 720p video of our effects in one of Valve's stock Episode Two maps. Let us know what you think!


Particle Based Muzzle Flashes


That's right, muzzle flashes are now particle based, meaning smoke, heat haze, and a ton of other effects. The change affects the muzzleflashes on both world models and the view models.

You've got to see them in motion to appreciate them. (Heat Haze + Smoke + Flare)

And keep in mind, they're still a WIP. (And the screen we chose is just awful.)

Watch the guns in the water effects video. That will give you an idea of what it looks like in motion.

Well, HOW the muzzle flashes work is pretty awesome, and way better than the original, it's just that at the moment, the muzzle flash, at least to me, looks too yellow. But the smoke was pretty cool.

The water should have some slow rolling waves though, with tiny white caps on the waves, sorta like the way crytek did theres.

They aren't that visible in the video, aside there not being too many droplets to begin with, though we've gone in and fixed that up.

The water effect looks great for waterdrops dripping into water but it looks unrealistic for water being shot. Look up a few video's of shooting water on youtube and you' ll see what I mean, HL2's effect was more resembling the real thing then yours.

Ok guys i only want the best for you. If you want real productiv criticism, make splashes in the water (:D) and the water animation is a little too short. If you fix that all the haters will shut the f*ck up and your mod will look so much cooler. think about it.

How does me leaving a comment about something that i think they can improve to make an awesome mod even more awesome, make me a "hater"? The world would be a very ****** and mediocre place without constructive criticism imo.

Also outside opinions on stuff are important for modders (and pretty much anyone), when working on something for hours and hours it is easy to lose perspective and focus to much on something and not focus on something else. Outside opinions can make you realize that something has been neglected or not thought through. Isn't that positive?

The smoke coming from the gun looks very nice, but like some of the other commenters here I think the original muzzleflash was better (at least compared to the current form).

Oh, and about the weapon: I can't stop thinking about the guy described in "Raising the Bar" (his head can be found in HL2 in Eli's lab). The Eradicator or something like that. Was supposed to be in HL2 universe as a Combine walking around the streets after fights dissolving corpses with his gun.
