Hello, defenders! Since Base Defense has a lot higher game difficulty than previous versions I decided to make a guide to help you get into Base Defense universe.

Let's start with a story.

Yes, Base Defense has it's own story and has nothing in common with the one from Half-Life.

The war of good and evil was interrupted by alien invasion. Demons ran off, angels got back to heaven. Only humans left, surrounded by aliens. Here come 3 characters called defenders. They send all the humans to another realm, which is causing the merger of past and actual times. All events in the game are happening after the merger.

So who are we and where are we?

You choose one of three classes (defenders) which are the main characters of the story and get teleported to battlefield where the game starts.

Now I want to give you some suggestions:

  • As you spawn, toggle on the Task Menu (it's "v" key by default), so you can see current task.
  • Never stay on one spot, be on the run to avoid projectiles and hide from focused attacks.
  • Stop only when you're sure there's nobody hunting you.
  • Never forget about your skills they can save your life! (Skill Menu is "b" by default).
  • Use hotkeys defined in Control Settings in Options menu.
  • Every time you raise the barricade, you get $50.
  • Use medkits and manakits, they restore 15% of your maximum hp/mp. (Default keys are "n" and "m").

I got a new item! What should I do?

Check your Inventory Menu (it's "i" by default), now it's new, you can pick up more items, compare them and equip the best one.

I see the book floating in the air, I definitely should read it!

No, mate, you don't. It's just suicide if you're not ready enough, so if you see this book:

Don't even think to read it, just turn around and run.

It is so hard, I just can't survive this!

Nope, it's not, it only begins to be hard at 25th wave, when appears a 25% chance to spawn Unique Wave (learn about it in Base Defense Information Pages, Gameplay -> Monsters section). So make some training and you will get better results.

If you really find this completely unplayable hard, then I suggest you to play with your friend (and let's hope he's better in bdef than you :D). The point is: when you die and your friend lives, then finishes current wave, you can respawn in a break, then find your loot. You will lose all your weapon, but as you get your backpack you will get your level, stats and penalized amount of money. So this little green bag is your friend!

Never leave him! That's why: experience you have now and from the backpack doesn't sum. Note: if you have new items in your inventory and pick up your backpack, all these items will be lost, backpack has your old saved inventory and will make it like it was before your death.

Can you add an Option to Disable Players Level Resetting & Items/Weapons getting Removed on Death in the next Version?

Already did, but only multiplayer game. If your mate survives, then you will be able to spawn in a break without any loss (1710+). In current version (1705) you drop backpack after death with your loot, but lose some of money and all weapons.

It's a nice gamemode but haven't seen anyone actually enter the one server that's in the browser.

Thanks! You can check gametracker info, it has players, but not often. Ask your friends to play.

This is pretty amazing, I love this mod and been following it for a long time. I've also been playing CDI (Complex Doom Invasion) which reminds me of this, and been thinking if you could add something like a "level progression" like in CDI which consists if you defeat a wave, a new region opens till you reach the end of the map(A final wave), the map is fully opened and you just keep on fighting, or your team is defeated.

I love this mod!

Thank you! Yeah, I was thinking about some scenario maps, where you need to push through monster hordes, but it quite not time for this yet. I'm still doing balancing work.
Will see, this requires not only new maps, but the code too.

Yes, I was planning on some triggers like trigger_wall_wave which could be a brush entity, that opens when a wave ends/or starts.

It's easy to make in the latest available version (1705) with game_counter and multimanager called "game_wavebegin" or "game_waveend", depends on what exactly you want.
So let's count every ended wave: we make multimanager with name "game_waveend" and its target game_counter, the last entity works the same way as in vanilla HL, so when it reaches some number you need, it will activate an object (e.g. door leading to next area).

Great mod, really made the traditional Half-life mechanics feel modern in-tune with the Horde-style systems we see in most shooters and stays fun throughout. Alot of balance problems though, most noticeably the AI-pathfinding which is so horrendous at finding players hiding in spots that its game-breaking at times. However with 4 players running around the map proper, its a blast.
