i understand what APinkPanzer is getting at. traditionally having a quality unit of fighting men depends on their training, we can all agree with that. its a lot harder to get a large, dense concentration of fighters to use swords effectively in close quarters. thats why, throughout history, spears have been the most common. its far easier to put a spear in the hands of someone, and explain the finer points (har!) to allow them to effectively wield it. little more difficult with swords.
Why is he being downvoted he's absolutely correct. Swords are more expensive to create than spears. Axes and spears were more popular against common infantry especially if the infantry is made up of peasants. Swords were mostly used as backup weapons to a polearm of sorts or as a status symbol on the battlefield.
what I was getting at was the fact is there seems to be no infantry at all without a form of polearm infact most of the factions seem to have just one weapon for their infantry

Where do you get those soldiers with the red robes? I know they are Lannister but I didn't see them in the troop tiers.
