Hi. I'm YoshiThePyro. I may not mod myself yet, but I certainly do play my fair share of them. I'm always happy to provide my thoughts on a work so long as I have the means to play it.

Jolly's Hardcore Mod

Mod review

Watching Jolly get broken by this was a pleasure, though having played it myself I come away a little underwhelmed. That's not to say I expected too much I look at mods like these as elaborate shitposts and as far as those go, this is pretty good. I just feel like it could've been a lot more and I want to SEE more from you.

The drab Nova Prospekt look works but I'd have loved to see something more unique even if this is something of a spiritual successor to the "Very Hard Mod". Gameplay also feels quite unrefined especially where explosives are involved with consistent entity limit crashes in the explosive barrel trap. The ride through the zombie infested toxic pool in the dark just feels like total ******** on anything above Easy and I'm not terribly keen on the zombie spam. The end section is pretty good actually, even if its a condensed slaughter map I found it quite enjoyable to fight through from the Combine to the zombie horde in a small room.

That "secret map" though was not worth dragging the gnome through the map for. A pitifully easy and plain boss fight against presumably the same gnome one's been escorting through the mod. With some more elaborate mechanics it could be a spectacle. Something for a possible sequel; something I'd be glad to play if it happens. You've already broken Jolly, but you've not stopped him from putting himself back together again...

I did go and beat it deathless anyway. Shouldn't be too hard to find the video up on YouTube.

Gamma Energy

Mod review may contain spoilers

This mod's really fun actually.

The main game offers 29 chambers, each bringing a new flavour of puzzle solving to the table with some wonderful level design, save for a few instances. The only thing letting it down really is a few misses with gameplay mechanics, the slightly confusing escape levels and the rather mediocre and obtuse boss fight at the end.

Most of the chambers are well put together with fun to figure out solutions, although a few mechanics are unwelcome and cumbersome to work with. The least offensive of these are the pneumatic tubes you have to guide balls or cubes through. These are inoffensive, but always laughably easy and as a result, quite unsatisfying to solve. At the other end of the scale, glass breaking is now a core mechanic seen in several chambers, requiring either a physics object or god forbid a turret to break. With physics objects it's fine enough, you just have to try a few times to give your object enough velocity to break through, turrets on the other hand... no. You need to knock them down so they shoot through it, and sometimes on small platforms... eugh. Not fun. The escape sequence introduces explosive barrels and charged energy pellets you need to redirect away from the tubes they're travelling through, neither of which are fun to work with honestly, a real pace-breaker. Not helping their case is the final battle, an obtuse clusterf*ck of map design and sloppy mechanics.

Talking post-game, the bonus chambers offer some nice content to get through, with Gemini in particular introducing a blue laser field that blocks test objects but not the player, making for an interesting, albeit long chamber.

I didn't dive into the advanced chambers really, but I did try "Uninsulated Electrical Parts" Advanced and beat it very easily. I beat the main few puzzle sections with little difficulty, but instead of going to all of that extensive behind-the-scenes stuff, I decided to beat it by getting a fast enough accelerated back-hop going to pass through the two-hit-kill electricity blocking the exit. lol.

A very solid mod overall and a recommendation from myself to try it.

Portal: Unity

Mod review

I found this mod very enjoyable. The test chambers, all 22 of them (It is 22 right?) contain very solid puzzles requiring thought, precision and not being a *******. Though, you guys have a very unhealthy obsession with rocket turrets. I remember dropping into one of the chambers' rooms, 19 I think it was. Beforehand HADES said "I don't think you're going to like what's in this room, but I will." I was greeted with four rockets all aimed at me. I think my face looked a little like this: ._. "...f*ck..." was all I could say.

The game's music was well chosen in my eyes. Or ears rather. (or composed? I'm going by the thought that you didn't make these here.) I particularly enjoyed the use of "orbit"

I found the beginning of test chamber 16 (the one where "one third of subjects beat it on their third try" if I'm not mistaken.)in particular very confusing. Got it in the end though. I think it could have a clearer solution. Also on the subject of test chambers, I feel as though they began to decline in quality after test chamber 19

I found it rather odd going through that light levels stayed the same throughout the entire mod. Not to mention there were no lights to be seen.

I think the sections leading up to the (very underwhelming) fight with HADES could have lasted longer. As well as the area just after you beat him and find his... blue spinning brain?

And uh, this is likely just me. But the portals didn't look right. The blue and orange were there sure, but it's as though they were rectangular... It's hard to describe.

Overall, very solid mod. You're editing it? That's wonderful! This mod can now be even greater! ^v^
