I'm no expert, but you also need to edit the .ANI file to enable the new RLE. When you import them back into the xcr, do not encrypt them.

The Main Campaign ends either if you get away from Dmaze or you reach year 4000, whichever happens first. Time is limited so you need to plan your actions carefully. It is but a portion of it available in beta, just to get the feel of how it will be and also to provide the item stash!
Playing Chapter 2 first will make things easier in the campaign, because Esgaleth will have the stats you chosen (+10 levels I think invested by the AI).

So eh... how to I cast Douse on the fire trap (Anguilla sanctuary)? I do the magic symbols correctly and a special graphical effect surrounds me, but nothing else happens.

It might be a bug, I don't think we ever tested this scenario, where you level up 10 (ten!) times in a single scenario. I'll check it out.

If you have say +3 Vampirism, you will get the minimum between your vampirism skill (3) and the damage dealt. Generally this means you will get +3 hit points, unless your hit is a miss (deals 1 damage, so it gives +1 hit point). It's not percent, neither for heroes nor for units.

Funny, but the separate cooldown for some items was also suggested before and is being looked into. Though I believe the Swiftness skill is what broke your hero in this case (which is fixed in 0.8.7 dev).

Sound like a incorrect install to me. Delete your mydocuments/the protectors folder, see if it helps.
0.8.7 already has many new avatars, human race included.
