I vote for subfactions. It puts more emphasis on scouting the battlefield and clears up the otherwise massive faction select list. Am I correct in thinking that they are all full factions either way, the difference is in the way they are chosen?

That's kinda the Sherman's original design philosophy, IMO. "This ain't a good tank by anyone's accounting, heck, it's kinda crappy...but it's still a freaking tank, and it's significantly better than no tank. plus, it's cheap!"

First, I was making a joke in reply to your comment about camera angles(see: Honey, I shrunk the kids); second, I would shrink my MCV in a heartbeat if I was trying to get it away from enemy forces or was doing some crazy "tactically insert my MCV into the enemy base" thing.

I think I'm going to agree with you there, but that doesn't stop the Pincer & Victor Charlie from getting on my nerves. The sniper might be fun too.

The awesome part of focusing on the mini-mod first is that the Vietcong and ARVN can trial Paradox's minor faction feature :P that, and I am seriously looking forward to how they'll do this.
