I might be WRONG/RIGHT, But I am not a hater, and I can assure you too, if I had engaged in a simple flaming argument with you over whatever subject, because my opinion differs from yours, I still do sleep at night and very comfortable too.--- --- I actually do consider myself a nice, decent, good, honest and hardworking individual, and in no way do I say I am perfect, or better than you, or anyone else... Not that I have anything against the game, just wish it had more substance for single player, a story atleast, like contra...

I'm not big on competative games really, I almost never participate in MP games except for co-op or ocassional LAN once a month... This does look somewhat epic! Makes me wonder about KAG, if thats going to be the same

Joe_Shmoe @ Mods using others' intellectual property (without permission)

The options available for these polls are always somewhat related to eachother, and you cant choose multiples. In this case especially I would agree to all of them, since neither really contradict each other. except option 2 and 3 (which isnt really a contradiction), which is a 50/50 deal, either it popularises the franchise or damages it. but I can agree to all of them, and 6.

Anyhow, the one that stands out most for modding really is popularise the franchise, if its a mod, I would say stick to the IP your provided, If you use HL2, then make a HL2 mod, that would popularise the HL2 game, Dont go making a mod for another game fanchise like Resident evil using HL2... Thats just looking for trouble, either you will make the IP owners look bad if you do too good of a job, or you would make the franchise look bad if you do a crappy job. Either stick with the theme, or if you want to do a total conversion, then comeup with your own IP.

As for Indie games, (abit off topic) ceate your own IP strictly. Unless you get confirmation from original franchise IP owners.

Joe_Shmoe @ Two Specific Game Reviews

The layout of your blog is pretty neat, might need to learn to do it myself.. But as for your reviews, need to work on that abit, review journalism is all about writing, and you have some spelling and grammar issues which makes reading abit confusing.

Also you discuss the subject of the game as too personal. While you are the reviewer and you are allowed your opinions, you should remember to always set a standard to work with, otherwise your score will be somewhat biased and only appeal to people with similar taste. To standardize your score, breakup your score equally into catagories for example: Graphics, sound, gameplay, story and originality. These are 5 catagories that seem quite important to alot of people. Each of these 5 catagories get a score out of 10, and the overall score you multiply by 2, and devide by 10. ie: lets say crysis got 9, 7, 7, 5, 4 respectively.. Then add all together you get 32 x 2 = 64/10 = 6.4 out of 10. (im not sure how you even worked out your original score)

And lastly, this isn't entirely even necessary, but persoanlly I dont like point based score, because to me the technical aspects like graphics and story etc dont always make for a good game, instead I like to call it the "fun factor"... Quite alot of reviews include this in various ways, one can be a seperate score system, a star sytem, another that visually represents how fun it is called the "fun-o-meter", others do an overall summary of how fun the game was to play, note that none of these actually have anything to do with your technical score.

Hope this helps you adjust and refine your reviewing system for the better. =)

I voted pirate, but thats usually because piracy or borrowing is the one most reliable source for ensuring the game is exactly what I am paying for, I do however consult the other options, I do read reviews even though I dont trust them and it is just someones opinion that may differ from mine, I do follow media news of it which like a demo only shows the best side, and I do try a demo just for compatability and spec confirmation.

The vote "All of the above" should have been the last option lol

Joe_Shmoe @ Expecting a sequel of your favourite mod?

I choose sequelles (is that even a word?)

I have found very few sequels to actually be any better than the original, or even just good. Mostly because we compare sequels to the original games, the experience, if it was original and fresh, then that would make the sequel not so original, and deteroiates quickly (see the fuss over CoD after the first MW)

Either that or recreate a completely new experience for the sequel, then it may be shunned because it was nothing like the original (see the fuss over Unreal 2).

Orrr expectations and anticipation might just be soo damn high for the sequel because the first game was sooo damn awesome, that you cant beat it (see the fuss over Duke Nukem Forever)

The way I see it.. If a game or mod is sooo awesome, well then let it live on as a legend in the history of games/mods

"I don't know how this example would work with your words. If happiness is such an extreme emotion, does it only get triggered by extreme events (meeting the love of your life)?"

Yes.

Day to day feel, I feel good, or okay or fine... example

Hi, how are you?
I'm fine/okay/good and you?
I'm well too thanks.

Do I say "I'm happy and you?" You could, but it doesn't really seem to fit for a general day to day feeling, unless you have something to back it up with. like:

Hi, how are you?
I'm happy and you?
What are you happy about? (indicating that there must have been some event to trigger happiness)
I won a car =P

Anyways... This discussion is getting overrated now lol, I'm calling quits here.

Joe_Shmoe @ The reason...

Okay, so I see another probable issue that may cause us to missunderstanding each other, so to try and put this in perspective, think degree of comparison. Happy is an ultimate, there is no such thing as happier or happiest, if your happy you are happy, so if by default you are happy, then how would you describe feeling if you find the love of your life, or get the job of your dreams? happier? No, thats like being deader lol no such word, if your dead you are dead, no degree of comparison for happy, dead or sad. if your sad your sad, so two ultimate opposites whats in the middle then? Thats why I say neutral. But doesnt mean we dont feel good if we are neutral.

So once again, I believe we strive for happiness, by default we want to be happy because it is human nature, but happiness just doesnt fall into our laps, that job you want, that girl you want... Doesnt just drop into your lap by default. You gotta earn it.

I hope this made my point clear. The smiley face. Still the same perspective, same subject, unless your idea for the word happy is different than mine, which is why I included the degree of comparison, incase you thought that there was a happier and happiest to describe the more extremes of the norm, which there isnt, happy is only an extreme beyond feeling neutral... Perhaps your using the term happy wrong, neutral probably isn't the best term either, lets say okay or good then, feeling Okay or good... But I get what you are saying, but only thing is I dont agree with happiness as a default. Happyness being the key word... Feeling good or okay as a default, yes.

Joe_Shmoe @ The reason...

Now heres my version of it adding what you are missing, and also ignoring the personal issues, which makes my point, hopefully you see it here: ... When you are born it is brightly new painted and clean and you are happy, and your parents keep it that way because they solve your probs and they protect you from the bad world, and do whatever to make you happy, now when youre older, you have to do it yourself, face the world yourself, solve your own problems, and over time your smiley on the ground withers, come rain and shine, people walk over it, gets dirty and worn, peels and chips (the worldly issues which you cant fix with a plastic bag) because your parents arent protecting you anymore. This putting garbage (personal issues) aside... So you have to give it a fresh coat of paint every now and then, That fresh coat of paint is happiness again. That is like You finally get that job you wanted, or you fall in love, orrr whatever the case may be, but all that required effort, just as it would to paint a new coat.

So by default we are neutral if we clean up our act and keep our smiley clean from garbage litter, we are neutral, and neutral is good, we feel good, but happiness is like a very extreme positive beyond neutral, like getting high from adrenaline and excitement etc. Its not something that is with us 24/7.

Good karma+1 vote
Joe_Shmoe
Joe_Shmoe @ The reason...

lol okay okay okay, lets use your examples then, the problems I'm referring to are the worldly issues, things outside our hands of dealing with, the problems you referring to are personal problems, if we solve our personal problems then in my opinion we are neutral, not happy happy. Because the worldly issues still exist which we cant change. These things will get us down even if we feel good about ourselves. If you live in a dangerous neigbourhood you will still be afraid to walk the streets.

Now use your smiley on the ground for an example.. This is what you said: "Try to imagine a big smiley face on the ground, it symbolizes happiness. Now imagine some waste, maybe an empty soda can, it symbolizes an unsolved problem. The first time you don't solve a problem, it's not that much of a deal, you can still easily see the smiley face and you're happy. But the more unsolved problems you collect, the less you are going to be able to see the smiley face -> we are getting unhappy.

Now, imagine you have a big plastic bag with you, it symbolizes your will to solve old problems (personal development/spiritual growth). You pick up the waste and after some time, you're able to see the smiley again -> you're getting happier with each problem solved."

Joe_Shmoe
Joe_Shmoe @ The reason...

lol... Well I agree, But it all still seems focussed on the default (norm) state... Which is your subject.

Yes I agree we are born happy, thats because as kids we dont need to face problems, our parents do it for us. So naturally we never see the bad side, because we arent familiar with the warnings and the risks, since we are protected from it. So yes there is no effort required to be happy then, as for adults, thats in a perfect world...

And thats where I made my point, we dont live in a perfect world, the world doesnt revolve around us, and because the worlds state isnt perfect, the default isnt happy... To be happy in todays world requires alot of effort and trial and error.

My comment was just directed at... We feel neutral, Happy is an extreme, and sad is an oposite extreme, and preferebly we naturally aim to be happy because of course it feels better, but to achieve that extreme we need to earn it, put in effort... Likewise when we sad, its an extreme, you may not need to put in effort to get sad, but mostly yes you will have to **** up badly... But sometimes it hits you anyway, your cat dies or something.

So I suppose maybe you mean by default we always strive and want to be happy, instead of we are happy by default, that I can agree with.

I dont mean it as an attack, but I still think our perspective on the subject is the same... maybe we just disagree.

Joe_Shmoe @ The closed multi-player testing started

Also, because it can have a negative impact on the mod, it could be misunderstood for the final release, and damage the mods reputation.

Point is there is no point to share it with the world, since it is a beta mod, and it will release the final product to the entire world for free at some point.

That said, I too agree it shouldnt be handed out to just anyone, make a list of testers (10 - 20 or so fans) and only supply it to them.

Good blog lol... very interesting theory... But being happy is our default? I feel I should disagree...

The world and reality is a messed up place when you unveil the truth... Perhaps certain countries or towns are different from the rest, but I like to believe that things like two faced scumbags, drugs, rapists, murderers, pedophiles, etc exist everywhere, (rather safe than sorry). There is nothing happy about it, yet it has become the norm, and so by default we cant be happy, unless you just ignore and don't care about those things, (which could lead to a rude awakening)

But overall you need to make an effort, look past it, try to make a difference, etc, which requires effort, so by that you have to put in effort to gain happiness. As you say, most people try and do the least amount of effort to meet expected standards. If we do more than that, then I would bet that you would make someone happy, and in turn, you may be rewarded with happiness.

And so happiness requires effort. What you put in = what you get out. If happiness was the default, Then the world would be a much better place, because people wouldn't be required to do anything and still be happy.

Thats just my perspective on your subject. It will most probably differ from person to person depending on numerous different things during their experience growing up...

I thought it would be something like playing as either team wolf or team sheep, lol with weapons... looks interesting, but I dont have quake 2 =( how bout makin more mods for idTECH4? Going to try out the last stand mod, sounds interesting.
