Goreagulation

Mod review

I learned about this mod from a youtube video highlighting one of the choices you can make to change the outcome of the story. To be honest, I was only expecting a cheap HL2 map-pack with a few scenarios added in, but this mod draws you in and doesn't let go. Even though this is obviously HL2, the atmosphere and progression feel totally different. The map design feels more old school survival horror like Doom 3.

Obviously, comparisons have been made to a recent biopunk game called Scorn and I can definitely see similarities in the weapon and world design, but this is a more action-oriented experience. As you progress through this short mod, there is always something new to keep you playing. It's like a 5-hour energy drink. Gone before you know it, but full of excitement.

I was highly impressed by the quality of the voice acting. It actually sounds like the voice acting you'd expect from a big budget game. You know how some mods and indie games have that sort of cringey, low quality microphone sound to them? Well, this is nothing like that. The few NPCs you encounter sound like they were taken straight out of HL2, but the voice acting is completely original. Whoever's responsible could definitely have a career as a professional voice actor.

One major gripe I have are the key items. They are surrounded by a glowing sprite that makes them easier to find. I wish the developer had more faith in the player's skill rather than spoon-feeding them the solution. The original Half-Life 2 hid key items in such a way that actually made them challenging to find. Remember the batteries on The Coast? Yeah, that's an example of how to make a puzzle difficult and interesting. Sadly, this is one aspect of Goreagulation that falls short.

Overall, Goreagulation is an excellent, albeit short experience made during a drought of good story driven HL2 mods. I would love to see some more episodes released which would help make the overall experience more substantial. This is the most fun I've had with a HL2 mod since G-String.

White Day

Game review

Save got corrupted and I couldn't use my inventory properly. This is after pouring in several hours of frustration when I couldn't find a key that was placed in a very inconspicuous area. Not worth my time or patience.

The Black House

Game review

As the developer's first game on the Unity engine, The Black House is pretty good. Suspense is built quite well with a few scares here and there. However, the game is very short and there is not much involvement. The story is the typical paranormal/monster house investigation. Overall, it was a positive experience and I would definitely like to see a sequel or successor with more length and complexity.

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare

Game review

A beautiful, online, hand-to-hand combat game that takes place in medival times. Great gameplay, unique classes, only major flaw is the community which is made up mainly of d-bags.
