Half-Life : Residual Life

Mod review

Wonderful take on Half-Life, incredibly immersive and lore-packed. Definitely on my top 10 SP mods of all time. Go play it and don't allow yourself to be told by other reviewers (that includes me) what's it like.

Rome: Total War

Game review

The best Total War. It is absolutely mindboggling how a game could succeed in every aspect as Rome Total War did. The 4X aspect, while not Civilization, it's not just for show. The flexibility it allows is amazing, and serves as a nice palette cleanser for the main dish: the battles.

Enough has been said of this game, and franchise, at this point in time. So, do yourself a favour and try Rome TW for yourself.

Shoutout to Jeff Van Dyck: you created the soundtrack that inspired me to compose. I cannot for the life of me emphasize the sheer perfection of Rome ost.

Poke646: Anniversary Edition

Mod review

An absolutely fantastic experience. I've played my fair share of mods (specially single player ones) and for some reason, Poke646 was one of the very few that i just didn't play for whatever reason. What a terrible mistake.

Simply put, the best single player mod i've ever played, elevating both the Half-Life spirit (immersion, pacing, level design), and the best that the SP mod school has to offer.

I find incredible that after all these years, and incredibly awesome mods like Half-Life: Echoes, Poke646 remains unsurpassed in terms of single player mod design.

Top tier atmosphere, level design, encounter design and just plain good taste in changing the core mechanics a notch to remain both fresh and familiar.

Arx Fatalis

Game review

Arx Fatalis was like a divine revelation to me. At the time i played it, i had already played other immersive sims like Thief, Deus Ex, System Shock and even Arkane later titles. Nonetheless, Arx has a charm that is unique to it.

It might not be as mechanically refined as Thief, but the range of possibilities Arx allows is just staggering. The immersiveness it creates is just unparalled even by today standards and while clunky in a lot of areas, it pulls you into its world like no other immersive sim out there.

The magic system got a lot of praise also. I'm not its biggest fan since i find it kinda gimmicky, but at the time it helped Arx to diferentiate itself. I have no gripes with that.

Absolutely recommended.

F.E.A.R.

Game review

One of the best shooters of all time. Combat arenas have an incredibly tight feel to them that's even enhanced by the horror theme of the game. A fantastic AI gives way to a myriad of emergent shoot-outs that often play not just as if you were playing a by the numbers fps, because the game gives you actual agency.

Would love to see a reimagining of the game tightness towards the shooter genre but with a more immersive-sim esque design. Regardles, F.E.A.R is a must have.

Thief: The Dark Project

Game review

A masterpiece. A fundamental part of the Golden Age of the Immersive Sim triunvirate (alongside System Shock 2 and Deus Ex).

Redefines what immersion in a game should be.

Unreal Tournament

Game review

Funniest fps multiplayer experience i've ever had. While Q3 might have all that skillceiling babble surrounding it, the sheer fun factor in UT99 is 10 times greater. Plus, moddeable right from the get go with an incredibly robust engine and level editor for the time makes it one easy softspot for mod lovers.

Mods, mutators, singleplayer campaigns, coop modes, combat simulators as deep as they can get, crazy chaotic **** to just have fun with. This is a game that really has it all.

A perfect 10/10, on my top 3 game list right up there with Deus Ex and Half-Life.

One of the greatest roleplaying experiences you'll have. It isn't only one of the greatest stories the medium and the genre is capable of telling, but its absolutely the best and most thought provoking story in all of the Star Wars franchise.

I really liked KOTOR 1 and is actually a lot easier to get into than KOTOR 2. But KOTOR 2 is just a masterpiece in rpg writing, brought to you by nothing less than Chris Avellone, the master writer and designer behind what a lot of people consider the best written crpg in existence: Planescape Torment.

For me, this is the definitive Star Wars experience and one of the best rpg's i've played.

Restored Content Mod makes it even better.

Year of the Dragon

Early access mod review

I find the concept of Year of the Dragon really interesting. As a matter of fact, i didn't actually get hooked into this just by it being a mod. Rather, what i actually find the most interesting is this mod as a toolkit for the people to create Spyro-based levels in Half-Life.

Then again, the demo left me kinda meh. It wasn't bad at all, specially considering its just a demo. But then again, i'm still waiting for the true meat of this mod to reveal itself. This 6/10 will probably change with future releases; overall, it is interesting.
