I cannot thank Monolith enough for their first installment in the series.
Incredible atmosphere thanks to detailed, haunting environments with a creepy soundtrack. There are many jumpscares, but at the same time you never feel really safe. I'm easily frightened though, so I can't really say how scared you will be.
The story is enjoyable, but not exactly the main reason you play.
The gameplay is really funny, with dismemberment, slow motion and very intelligent enemy AI. Most of the arsenal makes for entertaining battles, but there are some weapons that are more interesting than others. You have a pistol that you can dual wield, a sub machine gun, a shotgun, an assault rifle and a rocket launcher. Then there is the nailgun and the plasma cannon. The first one can be used to nail enemies to a wall or ceiling etc, and the other to completely strip them down to the bone, leaving only a smoking skeleton. There are also two different grenades and a mine.
With the multiplayer, which has been free to download since the realease (if I recall correctly) you can bring your friends for some fun games of deathmatch, team deathmatch or capture the flag.

Intense, exhilarating, brutal and terrifying!

Something no FPS fan should ever overlook! :)

Amazing game with amazing atmosphere and a great story.

F.E.A.R. Platinum: FEAR + FEAR Extraction Point + FEAR Perseus Mandate

FEAR is a very fun FPS game. This is mostly due to reflex time (slow motion). Without it i doubt the game would be as good.
There is also the creepy atmosphere that keeps it interesting, although not creepy enough.

The gameplay is where this game shines for me, its great, better than modern FPS's:
You are able to hold up to 3 weapons.
There is no button to go into cover, instead you stand or crouch behind walls and objects and can lean out to shoot.
No regenerating health. You can carry 10 health packs. And pick up armor.
No cut scenes, you're always in control of the protagonist
And of course the slow mo.

The game is gory. You can tear enemies apart with bullets. Even blow heads off with shotguns

The story is pretty good, characters are good even though you spend most of your time alone and dont get to interact with them much.

However, the game seems to be more fun and creepier at the beginning.
But afterwards it gets a little repetitive. You fight the same enemies throughout the game.

I wish i didnt spend so much time indoors, and more time outside in the streets.

Sound design is also amazing. Just the sound of walking or climbing or swimming sound so good.
The weapons, especially the shotgun, sound great.
However what this game is missing is a soundtrack. There is no background music to get you pumped up, especially during battle sequences.

One of the best FPS I've played.

One of my favourite games ever.

This game is really REALLY GOOD!
You have to play it! The others kind off sucked but this game was just brilliant! Great gameplay, great sounds, great graphics (has explosions with a crap load of particles!) has great multiplayer and you can get co-op mods for it!
Also if you want to just do online you can get F.E.A.R Combat which is just the online and is for free!

This game is a easy 10/10 and its like 50billions jizzs in your pants! GET IT!

To put it simple the game is great!

The story is very well thought up, very interesting and keeps the player wondering the whole time...
The atmosphere that the game intruduces is trully unique, from music to enemies and whole level designs seem to all fit prefectly.
The action and horror is mixed in and presents a perfect unity.
Once you have had enough of the firefights and want something els to happen at that exact moment the horror kicks in, it is all placed in the exact time and moment when the player is tired or annoyed.
Once the player has had his heart pumping strong enough and runs screaming through the corridors hunted by what ever hides in the dark, sometimes you are jumped in right from up front when you least expect it.
The developers have trully worked hard to make this an enriching experience!
There are lots of weapons to be used, depending on the player's style of playing, and not every weapon is suitable for every situation so pick carefully.
No complaints from the AI, it is very well created and gives you hell of a time on bringing down the enemies numbers.
Luckuly further in the game you are given the means to handle these situations better by giving you small advantages, which are really valuable if you are to finnish the game, without them it would have been hell of a lot harder.

The game's graphics may not look up to date but trust me when I say that you won't need all the special effects of todays modern games, the ones that are in the game work just fine.

The AI is just so good I really love the horror feeling that this game had. I wish these games take lesson to this game.

Pretty nice game

It's a fine game but it's way too difficult to get into for the first time playthrough. It was both on me, but I feel like also the game itself since it relies way too heavily on slow motion to make the combat possible, and gives you way too little of it, and health, in the starting levels. I expected slow motion to be an addition to give players the upper hand, not a necessity to give them a fighting chance at all. It runs out way too fast in those early levels, and the weapon selection doesn't help either.
Only after you find the shotgun and penetrator is when you can actually kill something consistently.
At first I assumed that staying behind cover would help me in combat, but enemies can hit you all the same no matter how much of you is sticking from behind cover, and you die in about 2 or 3 hits. At the same time, going in guns blazing exposes you to enemy fire from all directions even more, and even using slow motion the accuracy with most guns goes out the window, and then, again in the starting levels of the game, slow motion runs out way too soon so you are left in the middle of the battle field, surrounded by enemies without your reflexes to back you up. Not a good start for a game.
It gets better as the time goes and you collect permament power ups to your health and slow motion reflex, but I feel like it should've been maxed from the start, as it's not like an RPG where you get to choose when you can upgrade them, it's predetermined so you are stuck with **** poor gunplay for about two hours of the game.
Level design is nice, there are a lot of branching paths, but navigating around them is difficult and unintuitive. All in all I think the level design compliments enemy AI more than player exploration.
Horror elements are incredibly weak and the story is uninteresting, while graphics, aside from lighting and shadows, are really dated and ugly to look at, even compared to most games at the time, weapon animations look like something out of a hl2 mod, and the entire game takes place throughout uninspired looking warehouses and concrete interiors like sewers and such.
The game's combat is ok, it is satisfying to clear out enemies, but with only 2 or 3 actually useful weapons and over reliance on using slow motion, and bullet spongy enemies (most of the time I got to kill two enemies at a time before slow motion ran out), this game is a one-trick pony to me.
It's a fine game, but not really that great as people make it out to be.
If the game gave you a choice between slow, tactical cover shooting approach and a fast, guns blazing open combat with slow motion, it would've been much better and more innovative. As it stands, there are games with equally and more satisfying gunplay that don't force you into slow motion and stretching the game's playtime because of it.
