Divide et Impera

Mod review

Definitely a great mod. Unit detail is high, there's plenty of new features (like reforms). It's pretty simple to say that this is the Europa Barbarorum of Rome II (although it has faster battles than EB II, fortunately).
The only downside is that map icons aren't changed, as far as I can see. Although I'm not aware if it's possible to do so. Another problem is that Germans and Gauls aren't differentiated more in terms of buildings, however I'm not sure if that's possible either.

Bellum Imperii

Mod review

It's a really great mod, but still in alpha so only 8. The reason it's 7 is because it takes place after the Gauls and Greeks etc. I guess we have Rome at War for that. Nice to see a young promising mod, though.

March of Rome

Mod review

It definitely needs work, but it's good. The retexturing of OSPs look very nice (I enjoy the new colourful shields) but unfortunately bots (I live too far away from a server country) in MP hardly use them and then they start to look like Romae Bellum Gauls. The Single player and custom battle options should be removed until they actually do something other than what Native does.

Great mod. Great combat system especially. Definitely recommended. Only problem is that the start is slow and usually difficult. Overall the amount of effort put into the mod is amazing.

Romae Bellum

Mod review

Too...many...OSPs.
Firstly, this mod is anything BUT historically accurate. Lorica Segmentata? Sparta the capital of Greece? One city in Gaul? What is this?! Firstly, none of the 'barbarian' factions have proper names, as in the language of those people. It really isn't that hard, just go to the Europa Barbarorum wiki and you've the names.
So, let's compare to Rome at War mod
Doesn't compare in terms of models, textures, scenes, historical accuracy or gameplay, only thing this has is lots of factions, which all look the same really.

Absolutely fantastic mod. Feels complete. Detailed weapons and armour. Great combat system and overall very entertaining. I recommend this mod if you like the Crusades or even if you're just looking for a good mod to play.

Europa Barbarorum 2

Mod review

Currently great, and looks like it's getting better! Sure, there seem to be a few bugs, but that means nothing when you look at the amount of effort put into it. The fact is, this isn't a faction specific mod, something we get far too often for most mods in games (*cough* Roman based mods *cough*). Each faction has its own histories (most of them still need to be written) and stories. Each building has a historical description. It's great, something most mods lack. The combat, while being slow, is fun.

Rome At War

Mod review

This mod is truly astonishing.

The amount of detail they put into the models for small things like helmets or swords is so amazing it'll leave you breathless. This isn't your average OSP mod. The armours actually look real.

Currently the single player is in Alpha so I'll spare the rod. The map is very large but for the most part empty. Hopefully in the future it'll become full. Certain areas need some smoothing out (cough cough Greece) but overall it's pretty accurate. Most of the villages and towns don't have new scenes but from what I've seen that's being worked on (although for this they use OSPs, great ones just to add).

The "requires 64-bit" is quite a downside but can be fixed quite easily using this method: forums.taleworlds.com/index.php/topic,131274.0.html

The Multiplayer is great fun, but you'll find that it's rare to see people on the server. There is a fair selections of Clans to join. Special Multiplayer formation options like Testudo or Phalanx make it much more...immersive.

For the factions, it becomes rather obvious that some factions have much more variety in arms and armour than others. Although this mod is not complete, so I can only hope that'll be balanced out. The games music and UI addons make it quite a lot better. Although I'd recommend that they change the Hellenic UI text colour to something other than yellow (it makes it invisible most of the time, rather frustrating).

Honestly this mod doesn't add too many features in SP besides Formations and Freelancer. Like I said, it's in alpha.

To sum it up I say, if you are interested in the period surrounding 300 BC (the EB period) then you should download this mod and try to support them. This mod's single player is in alpha and already it's better than the well known Romae Bellum IMHO.

Edit: I want to add that for those of you complaining about lack of factions, realise that what they're doing right now is making the 'base' factions, of which they can then expand (e.g finishing the current Celts would allow them to make almost all the celtic factions or finishing the Helles would make making other Hellenic factions extremely easy). Plus the mod is in Alpha, anyway. More factions will be added quickly I'd imagine, they just need to finish the current factions and they'll have a good base to work off of. However, the modders have a certain attitude of future belief, not saying that it's untrue the future updates will make it more magnificent, 2.5 already looks like an extreme improvement on 2.4, but constantly saying they'll redo scenes later on, or redo items etc. gets a bit repetitive. Sure, their scenes are more lackluster due to lack of scene props, however certain scenes like Capua, Genua and Ostia look amazing.
