Dragonsdoom's roots started as a hardcore gamer; playing hundreds of hours of Counter-strike, Baulder's Gate and Sim-style games for years. Even as he played such games, he was fascinated with the concept of 'Level Editors', creating many small levels for such games as Sim City, Age of Empires and Stronghold. He eventually experimented with further design concepts such as GUI style mods in Age of Empires. After a time, he decided to become a developer himself, to be more than a consumer amongst the horde and give back to the community. He learned true 3d level design by starting on the Source engine, and is currently learning how to do do every aspect of game development in the hopes of starting his own indie company with some college pals.

Hi Derek,

I think the metal texture needs aging. The dried blood, the heavily wrinkled pants, the starved proportions of the character, all of these say this creature has been in this state for a long time. The metal seems out of place to me because of its relatively shiny and unblemished appearance.

Sure it looks scraped, but not rusty, pitted, and stained with age.

The bolts could use a bit of definition as well I think.

Nice work on the facial wrinkles and forearm textures, keep it up.

1) This is supposed to be over the top in a humorous way, the whole 'Fire darkness evil darkness darkness' thing was intended.

2) I liked Counter-Strike and played it quite a bit, even to the point of competitive league play.

3) Not everyone will understand this article, it requires a fairly decent vocabulary, a general understanding of the games involved and something of a appreciation for fantasy novels or games and how they are generally written.

4) Please do not contact me to tell me that one game or another came out at completely the wrong time for this article to make sense, it is a work of fiction.

I understood there was a less violent way to get past the earlier part, but I found it against my morals to allow the aliens to treat intelligent creatures in a way inferior to cattle, so I took the violent route.

Very good mod, enjoyed it quite a bit apart from two things:

(Very mild spoilers ahead)

The first bit of the arena is basically insanely hard on medium difficulty, by the time I got there I had ten health and had to resort to cheating for two health kits to survive it. (The ten health was from a earlier area where I had to take down 4 or 6 vorts with only a crowbar)

The second thing I disliked was the final part of the arena, which I tried to take on four times before finally stumbling over the key.

But apart from those issues I enjoyed it quite a bit and look forward to the next episode.
The visual quality of the level design was quite good,(More choices would have been nice though, especially in the first level) and the narration was both innovative for a source mod and top notch quality.

Either that shader is doing more than I think it is or you really need some AA there. Though overall from what little I know about engines myself it looks like a interesting one to work in.
