I can't quite describe what it is about STALKER that makes me love it so much. Having been playing games since the Commodore Amiga (in the late 1980s), I've played a lot (including many of the latest titles on the Xbox 360). Yet nothing else has ever given me the feelings I get when I go into the Zone.
It's the only game that has really hit the Open World / Military 1st person shooter / role-playing vibe.
I love scavenging weapons and ammo off corpses and selling them for cash to build up my main load-out. Times don't get much better than when you either find or buy your first telescopic sight (usually for the AK-74).
Added to that the combat is very real, with real bullet mechanics including bullet drop at distance and realistic scatter. So fights are tense and you really have to choose your location carefully to avoid being blown away!
Roll on Lost Alpha!

I love what you are doing with this mod!

With the upgraded weapon stats, how are you determining damage? Are you basing it just on calibre (i.e. the size of the wound channel), or do you have a formula using other ballistic data (e.g. muzzle velocity, round weight)?

Yes - more human enemies. In my opinion these are always the most fun fights.

Stalker has always held a special place in my heart. Its combination of gun-play, role-playing and the grimness of the zone has meant it really hit the sweet spot of gaming for me.
I've followed this mod now for over 2 years, and despite the delays in production it still stands head and shoulders above all the other mods. I have a lot of respect for the developers' wish to both recreate the Zone, as well as their wish to do it right.
Well done guys. Keep up the good work!

Have the team made any decisions about weapon stats (i.e. accuracy, flatness, rate of fire, handling, damage)?

When I played Priboi, I noticed that the weapons stats were quite modified from the original STALKER. A good example was the AKS-74U which turned out to be one of the better weapons in the game with regards to accuracy and damage. Now, I'm not complaining, it was quite fun having different weapons as the best weapons in-game, but I'm just asking what sort of decisions have been made in Lost Alpha.

Will you be going back to the original STALKER (or Build 1935) stats? And if there are new weapons added (e.g. the P90), how will you handle their stats?

Looking into these things myself, a lot of computer games factor weapon damage using the "Taylor KO Factor", which is fairly easy to calculate and models real damage quite well (okay, the formula was originally designed to model damage in large African game animals, but the principles should apply well to any animal, including humans).

Interestingly in real life, there is a lot of evidence now that the small calibre high velocity rounds (such as 5.56x45mmN and 5.45x39mmB) are less effective than originally thought. Hence a lot of research in the USA into new rounds such as the Remington 6.8mm SPC.

I guess the issue is if Skyrim uses a different game engine (e.g. better graphics, better AI). I remember some very promising mods for Morrowind dying a death as soon as Oblivion was released.

I've been gaming now for too many years to mention, and STALKER is my all-time favourite! A perfect mix of shooting and roleplaying.
