The purpose of the electoral college is to prevent the highly populated states without industry and agriculture (New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, D.C) from legally subjugating the less populated states with industry and agriculture. For instance New York has a high population, but cannot produce enough food to feed it's population. Conversely Nebraska produces a surplus of food in relation to it's population, but has a small population. Without an electoral college Nebraska would become a tributary state of the urbanized states, forcing many smaller states have no choice pay for unconstitutional programs of big city states with large welfare/socialist programs.
