the first and second images are the same terrain, but with different sun headings and elevation. I also tweaked the red in the clouds, this took about a total of 30 minutes.

There are two spots on the 2nd image were the Renderer messed up and generated 2 BIG black holes can you tell where I photo shopped it?

I haven't gotten around to mess with Terragen 2, but it is by far the best pure terrain editor and renderer. Have you tried to see if the materials carry over well if you export it to Max or Maya?

I haven't got into exporting anything from it yet, but there is indeed a plugin for max to work with terragen. Check out the link below to see a project that someone created using max and terragen along with the plugin.
The second link is the video created using the two.
Looks very promising.

Just some screens from terragen 2, I made a procedural terrain from fractals, and used the lighting and atmosphere settings to render out the completed image.
