Hydrogen is actually very hard to burn or make explode when pressurised(that's why hydrogen cell cars are safer).

The problem had be also something else back then. History pal.
The thing is, compressed hydrogen isn't going to give you any lift. It needs to be less dense than the surrounding air. Therefore it's still highly flamible.
This looks like a very ambitious mod, you have my watch ;D

may I remind you - Zeitgeist has a very fictional timeline, so everything is possible ;).
Although we're trying to focus the story on the glorious and glamorous moments of those days, not on the catastrophes and disasters ;P.
So i may see a gigant spyder robot inside a street in like the 50´s , and Einstein may not be the one who found a nuke , digged in the shadow by a simple word : E=mc2
