I'm not sure whether this is already planned/implemented (since I didn't find any clue about similar mechanic yet), how about having wargame-style (prime example: SSI-Generals series) "core units" for both friendly or enemy units in the campaign? For allies they can be either plot-specific character that'll change the course of the plot or simply a "save X units in this mission and they'll appear as reinforcement in the later mission" while enemy core units can be the same as the previous former (plot changing) or simply unit(s) that can be killed earlier to prevent them from appear in the future missions.
