I wonder whether the current briefing map that requires a custom image file can be automatically replaced with the top-down minimap view used in the editor (i.e the editor automatically takes a screenshot of the minimap image and save it to the respective mission folder)? So that at least you don't have to draw it on your own while having quite accurate horizontal position of friendly/enemy units.

On the topic of briefing maps, the find-the-hidden-unit missions are pretty dang annoying. Having some kind of general pointer to lead us to their locations would be nice, along even if we only had them on the briefing maps. At least with actual missions of that type, if they come up in the future. Having some kind of "area of interest" indicator would be useful for the Lampyridae challenge though.

Lampry's challenge was more a "let them come".

One of the MiG-29's challenge where you have to search & kill a Nighthawk, now that's like finding needle in haystack.

At some point, a nice briefing/debriefing editor would be cool to have for typical missions.

Maybe by default we could go for a satellite scan of the map? I'm thinking this style:

For 70's missions and stuff, I'd sort of like the ability to make a briefing using photographs or line things up like a file folder with "photos" and etc. I think if we had a replay function, we could actually set up some triggers and things to do a cinematic camera that played out certain parts of the action (dictated by triggers) in a gun-cam style or photo-noir (watch a bit of the action and then 'snap' a picture on the enemy kill, etc).

We need an .ini option to set the map filter to make it look like "modern monochrome green/blue" satellite map or classical or even WW2 era map. Bonus point if the unit arrow/symbol can be changed according to theme (standard arrows, miniaturized units, NATO symbols, etc)

Would be nice.

Especially if the mission editor could be - actually, I just had a thought, why not build the briefing elements into the mission so that the map produced for the briefing is always made accurate easily for any idiot making missions like myself? A lot of the pre-existing stuff could probably be used for the briefing dialogue and all that we'd really need is a sort of 'map viewer' that could basically do what you just said for the general briefings/debriefings. Pretty much straight ripping Ace Combat, but it's not like there was anything bad about the Ace Combat briefings.
