Look what the random map generator did!
About those houses in the previous picture - they weren't added to the map by man....
The random map generator has received quite a few updates. The biggest is that you can now see custom tiles / features appear in randomly generated maps. Visit the wiki for information on exactly how the RMG works and you'll understand what's been done here. But basically, random maps now have more variation!

Amazing, because it looked purposely made by a person, not a Random thing from an old game. You guys are outdoing yourselves with this.
The way that the RMG works is by piecing a map together by "pre-scripted" parts of a map. So although we never placed those buildings and tiles down, we did tell the RMG exactly where to place them to make that particular scene. It's then up to the RMG where to put that scene or even if it actually wants to use it!
We will continue to add more variation to random maps in the future, but for 0.8.7, the more common themes have received ~15% increase to their variation. (But the lava theme has received a 25% increase!)
I really love 0.8.7 random map themes (the detail is astonishing in some cases - I was passing by a single, tiny random wbc1 dead tree, but it was on fire and it actually had the fire sound being played!).
0.8.7 looks promissing in many aspects.
