On behalve of the Infinity team I want to wish you all a happy new year! 2008 Has been a great year for Infinity with a lot of progress on every department and the launch of our new website. We hope 2009 will be an even better year!

One of the latest developments is the integration of new planetary features like rivers and craters:

Rivers:
Using the cell noise and the GPU terrain generation, we are now able to create new interesting planetary shapes and features. We didn't plan to have rivers first because of technical limitations but we are happy to announce that Infinity will have a river feature!
"Fake" rivers I'm afraid, as it's only using the ocean-level threshold and they don't flow from high altitudes to low altitudes, but it's better than nothing.
For more Information about rivers check the development journal

Craters:
We have finally been able to produce a decent crater noise function, based on the cell noise. Each crater has a perfectly circular shape but then is deformed by a few octaves of fBm, to make it more natural. In  Everything is work in progress since we are still not 100% happy with it, as we think the craters's distribution is too uniform.

Top work guys... nice update... the impacts do seem a little like a string of pearls rather than scattered, but only noticeable if you are looking for it..

this mod looks truely awesome, i mean honestly gob smacking,
im getting the feeling that i might have to upgrademy computer quite a lot to play it though but if you guy keep up the quality of the work then its gonna be sorely tempting to splash out a couple of hundred quid to play this mod.

Great work

You should be able to play Infinity on a medium-range computer when it gets released. Also, it's a game not a mod ;)

The craters look like an overlay texture, it works really well in some parts (see the brown areas) but when its over the blue areas it looks a bit fake sorry to say. I think the overlay texture (assuming it is a texture) could use a bit more detail to make it look a bit more like a crater and also some kind of system to stop them from showing under water because it looks very strange (like blobs or imperfections or anomalies in the image).

That said the potential the technology has is amazing as I can only begin to imagine what crazy terrains could be accomplished with some creative and exciting artwork.

Very pleased with the Lake system though, however you're right could use the additional depth levels. I'll be sure to give this game a good playing when it's released ;)
