"High Entropy" is a single-player FPS adventure for PC. My goal for this one is recreating the feeling I had while playing some of my favorite FPS/adventure games, the shooter part will be a key component but exploring the levels and solving puzzles (physics based, using computers...) will also be part of the fun.

I have been working on this level, which will end up being the second one in the game, for the last few weeks. I chose this level as the first 'real' one to make because it serves as an introduction to many of the adventure mechanics of the game (and some shooting, although just a first taste) which meant that, in order to have it working properly, I was going to have to add many of the key features I wanted in the game but hadn't made so far or needed more work (interact with computers and comm

I have been working on this level, which will end up being the second one in the game, for the last few weeks. I chose this level as the first 'real' one to make because it serves as an introduction to many of the adventure mechanics of the game (and some shooting, although just a first taste) which meant that, in order to have it working properly, I was going to have to add many of the key features I wanted in the game but hadn't made so far or needed more work (interact with computers and communicate with other devices using them, pick up things, check your inventory, use things from the inventory with the environment to solve puzzles, read documents, search bodies/containers/desks...).

I'm quite happy with how it's taking shape, so today I thought it was time to make this work in progress gameplay video showing the current state of the level, which is not finished but at last close to what I planned. I don't want to reveal much of the story, so I'll just explain that the main character is wearing a pair of augmented reality glasses that show him a HUD with extra information about the things he sees, and his ammo and health levels, that also include an artificial intelligence that gives him tips and descriptions of things when asked (that's the robotic voice you hear in the video).

By the way, I've made a facebook page for the game, in case someone wants to check it out or give it a like:

This is coming along so very well!
To be honest I think there were only two things in this video that stood out to be somewhat flawed.
1 would be the voice of the AI, I'm not sure if it's just a WIP voice or closer to what you want as the final but it sounds a little too distorted and computerised in my opinion.
2 would be the constant sound of the camera rotating. I found it began to get quite annoying after about a few minutes, and seemed unrealistic that you could hear it throughout the entire level.
Anyway, coming along awesome. Can't wait for more development news!

Thanks!

I would like the AI voice to be like it's right now, if people don't hate it :), I do want it to sound computerized and not perfect, like how I imagine a real AI would sound like if you could make it talk/interact like that with the current technology (in fact it's made with a text-to-speech program and then edited a little to achieve that, and also because it is a cheap way to do it :D). My main fear is people don't liking this approach so I hope you found it strange sounding but not annoying...

I agree with the camera sound, I had lowered its volume some time ago exactly because I thought the same as you, but maybe I should lower it down even more (probably I got used to hearing it and don't notice if it's too high anymore).

The only problem with the AI is that it's a tad difficult to understand; I found myself relying on the subtitles.

Looks excellent though; nice use of sound. :)

Thanks! Yeah, sometimes some words sound a bit off although usually not many I think (always keeping in mind that it should sound a little artificial), I was quite happy with how phrases sounded in general but I'm probably too used to how it sounds and know what it is saying to be objective... I'll probably continue creating the AI voice this way if the combination voice + text is good enough to convey the messages while contributing to the atmosphere of the game and it at least doesn't annoy any player. Changing it in the future would be 'just' a matter of recording the phrases again using other method or voice actor so if the need really arises and I have the resources I could always do that.

Outstanding. For one person to generate something of this quality is very impressive.
