there's no such thing as a standalone mod though you can try browsing for 'indie' games only -- < insert subject games here >

Don't browse the games list, browse the mod list. --

Urban Terror. There is a standalone version and a Q3A version. -- Got off my ass and did something today. I quit. |

That makes it a standalone and a mod. Not a standalone mod. You can't modify something without having something to modify first. |

Well if I were to define anything as a standalone mod, Urban Terror would be it. Otherwise, they obviously don't exist. |

That doesn't make sense. You can't call it a standalone, since its built off of the Q3A engine directly. Every last aspect of it. A standalone is a GAME. Urban Terror is not a GAME. Who publishes it? Who owns the rights to it? See? It's a standalone mod client, and a mod. Edit: And even then, the standalone can't use PB! Edited by (in order): Gin, Gin -- Got off my ass and did something today. It can stand on it's own. That's a standalone. Or it can modify quake. That's a mod. It's both, but not a once. It's imposable to have both at once. Retail games are standalone, change the files and you have a mod. Make your own game that can run without another games installed and you have a standalone game. Get it? |

OK, lets have a bit of a definition time. Standalone means that you do not require another product to use the game, regardless of what its built off. Urban Terror may be built off the Quake 3 engine, but because it doesn't require Quake 3 to play, that makes it a standalone product. A mod is something that has been built on an existing game, meaning that you require the game to play it. Therefore, you cannot have a product that both requires and doesn't require an original product. Therefore there is no such thing as a 'standalone mod'. Gin, you don't need to publish something to make it standalone. There are plenty of unpublished, free games... that are games. |

Ok maybe from the definition there are no "Standalone Mods" but in the old version of MODDB there was the ability of browsing mods with the filter "Standalone" and there where really a few good projekts like World of Padman. I really liked these projekts but now you are not able to find them especially if you cant remember the name of the projects :-( Maybe the programmers of MODDB could think about adding it to the filters list again? |

It as - under the Games tab, browse indie games. Since they are not Mods they don't fit under the mods tab. They only lived in the Mods category in v3 because there wasn't anywhere else to put them -- "lets say Portal is a puzzle game, so its a rehash of Tetris" |

p.s. urban terror can't legally stand alone since it is derived from the q3 sdk license which strictly prohibits use of anything but the Quake III Arena product -- < insert subject games here >
