Hey guys

I dont no if this idea has been posted or not, but im curious about graphics cards (im updating my computer). I currently have a Radeon 9600 XT 128 mb and im hoping to upgrade to one of the newer cards on the market. I have been looking at possibly getting a Radeon X800 XT 256mb (which i found for only just over $500 which is cheap over hear considering ive seen them for up to $800...Australian that is). Ive also heard of other high grade cards from Nvidia (the FX or MX series or something like that).

What i wanted to know is which would be better, Radeon or Nvidia, and also what card specifically if any of you know about a card which is particulary good.

thanx guys

P.S. Price is also a bit of an issue...anything up to $500 Aus. $600 Aus is a maybe...

The X800XT at $500 would be perfect for you actually, as long as you make sure you've got PCI-X on your mobo and stuff.

So i should stick with that one rather then opt for an Nvidia card?

Yeah, because that is the top of the line card from ATI's previous generation, and anything better you'd probably look at the $800 mark.

yeh, one guy at a shop o was looking at was telling me to steer away from the X800's becoz they were too overpowered....he said, and i quote, "Buying the X800 would be like buying a ferarri to go grocery shopping". He tried to then seel me a card that was worse then the one i have now....

Wait, he told you NOT to buy a rather pricey card? And he's a salesperson? Is he "retahdud"?

I rather like the idea of using a ferrari to go grocery shopping. I'm running on dual 6600s - but the X800 series is perfectly fine in my books, as it's a damn good card with a mighty fine price tag. If you want any better, it'll definitely set you back far more :)

Lol yeh i dont no what he was thinking, the card he tried to sell me was only about $120. I wouldnt mind a ferrari to go shopping with either.

So i guess Nvidia is definately out on this one
thanx guys

weird statment, nvidias geforces are better than radeons, but youre comparing it to a 9200?? lets not confuse anybody here, nvidia and ati swap back and forth as far as whos on the top of the world when it comes to graphics cards.

right now, id say nvidia has the best bang for the buck, now that hurts to admit being an ati fanboy myself. in your price range, and im not 100% certain of the currency difference, but the 6800 series seems to be in your general price range.

a year ago i would have suggested an ATi card but not now. good luck!

Thanx guys. Im not too well educated in the way of graphics cards, in other words, i no nothing about them.

@HackerHellstorm

How new is the 6800 series of Nvidia graphics cards?

Out of the two I have ever had a Nividia Geforce FX 5600 and a Radeon ATI Sapphire 9250; both 256mb cards, the Geforce one was far better in reliability but graphics wise they are identical.

The FX Series Nividia's are usually pretty good value, got mine for $400 brand new, so price has probably dropped greatly since then.

do you know how old the 9200 series is? you cant compare it to a 5600FX, sure theres a version of the 250 with 256 onboard but theyre still not identical grpahics wise. your not making a fair comparison.

im not sure when it came out but its pretty new, its one of nvidias top-of-the-line cards. its above the 6600 and below the 7800.

If we're going to get into this argument and mention the stupidly expensive GeForce 7800, i'm just going to say this.
I've decided it's next on my upgrades list for my uber rig :D

Huh? Quadro FX 3000 isn't designed for gamming, its mostly for application and work, but not for gamming. You still can play games with the newest driver, but I doubt it would be better than 7800 GTX, plus its more expensive than 7800 GTX.

why not wait until the rediculously powerful nVidia GeForce 8300 comes out? If you buy a PS3 and open it up it has a removable 8300 (when it launches of course, its still a prototype, and Dev. kits use 7800) or why not just linux a PS3 and use that as your computer??????? I'm sticking to my guns, and i say shoot for the 6800 GTX. Or if your crazy like me, save up for DUAL 7800 GTX!!!!!!!!!!! I only have 40 dolars so far, but its a start ;) .

The Quadro is designed for CG orientated workstations - it's not specifically designed to play games, but fortunately it still retains enough of the more minor twiddlies required to play games with stupidly high graphics settings. Considering I'm building my rig into a high-end all encompassing game development workstation of sorts, that sort of kit comes highly prized. I'll still leave my dual 6600s in mind, just so I can switch between the two :D

What? The playstation 3 uses a custom built Nvidia graphics set that's based on the G70 7800 architecture (I think they're calling it the 'Reality Synthesizer' or RSX). It's not going to be removeable from the console. Secondly, the console is not going to allow for the installation of Linux, you can get that out of your head now, it won't allow for that sort of operating system installation, the hardware won't allow it.

As for dev kits, they're not actual dev kits, they're middleware mockups that allow early console development to take place. Most of the actual development is being built with a PC based SDK at present.

I guess it was kinda pointless posting this. Everyone seems to have their own opinions. So far it looks like it might be Nvidia that is getting the most support, but then again i dont know...

i had a gainward FX5900xt for about 2 years... it was good, was happy with it ;).. overclocked it and it ran my games just dandily. (:S).

The fan just stopped working though, but the card is still operational..my brother is using it to play guild wars atm. I upgraded and got a geforce 6800gt - which I am very happy about.

my brothers old radeon 9600 was pretty good too..did the job.

sry if this doesn't help you in any way :P.

If you're going to use Linux, STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM RADEONS

also i've noticed that radeons have strange visual output problems - i've experienced screen rippling and an overall dark look on desktop and games
