Hey moddb-user,

because some stupid kids go always over my profile and -1 all karma and people abuse the karma button just to show how awesome they are I had the idea, that it could be very usefull to create a function which shows who thumbed karma up or down, just to prevent that those inmature people stop trolling peoples profile.
It could be very usefull in my opinion.

greetings

yeah, happened to me once, i kinda think in my case it was someone/someones from the minecraft community :/ (if youre saying that the game is fine, but still needs to improve, it was beta duh, then people see you as the biggest evil thing in the world and throw rocks at you, though i said it politely..)
btw, i restored balance to first and second page of your comments by turning 0 to 1's xD

I never cared about karma, I find it kinda silly for the reasons you guys specified.

I go based on the avatar: if it's someone who's not a jerk, I tend to read what's after that avatar. :)

Karma is one of the most moronic things on the internet. It punishes people who make unpopular comments (even if they're true), and it provides a tool to harass people. We should get rid of karma.

Karma scares me I am afraid if I am gonna' get Bad Karma for honest comments! Once when I knew jack shit about Minecraft and had only played classic. Some pic was put up of the mobs and I only thought you could build no survival. Well anyway I simply said 'What does this have to do with Minecraft?' and I got like -40 karma absoloutely stupid!

So we should start a poll about karma, usefull or not?
I think in some points its usefull, just to show which comments are good or just sh*t. But there are a bunch of neg points, as Dotdroid and masternerdguy said.
And in my point of view this neg points are neg>pos at the moment, because all the people don't use it in the normal/correct way.

There are 2 problems with karma

  1. No accountability - Someone can just mod down everyone on the page and users won't be able to figure out who did it.
  2. Oversimplified - Like/Dislike is a binary thought process that loses the reason why something was liked or disliked. Also, people seem to think like = I agree and dislike = I disagree.

Here's my proposal (If we can't just get rid of karma, which I'd prefer)

  1. Allow us to view who modded us up and down.
  2. Separate Like/Dislike from I Agree/I Disagree. This can be done by requiring a reason for the karma being selected from a list before the karma is modified. These can be options like Interesting, Funny, Troll, etc.

Your first point is the exact theme of this topic. Because I wanted to get a karma "shower", who lists who modded up or down. :D

Because its a good idea and I'm sure you and I aren't the only ones who want it :)

Karma is generally abused. It might defeat the occasional ASCII trollface, but generally it's a political tool. With that in mind, there's no reason it should be anonymous.

Yes, you should stand for your decision and just dislike because you don't like this person.

well, you all have a very legitimate point and i agree on most part, one thing though, if you see which person karmed you down, wouldnt it become karma wars, when some slightly imature people start downvoting each other, because that person downvoted them..

Or we could just turn the "Like/Dislike" into "Agree/Disagree" and add the "X out of Y users agree on this".
Also yes, display who agreed on what, and for crying out loud: allow us to switch our vote if we make a mistake or change our mind! -_-
I believe this would be much more useful than the current "karma" system. Then again, a lot of the "social" aspects of Desura are still in the works.

I was confused for a good minute. 'Karma Shower' made me think of a certain other kind of 'shower'. Then I realised you meant 'displayer' not 'sprinkler'.

As for MHO, I don't use the Karma function.

Sorry Ambient, didn't know a good word for it :P
Akex, that also a nice idea. And I think a function for switching the vote is necessary :D

That would work pretty well. I forgot about not being able to change the karma we issued later, thanks for reminding me.

So, I can say that we want...

  • able to switch the karma we issued
  • change the name to Agree/Disagree
  • and get a list who agreed/disagreed

Thats it, or?

First off.. Ask why? Why would you care if your comment has negative points from some troll. Think about it this way. If one person see's a buried comment 90% of the time they will check what it says; burying does nothing but invite everyone to check it out. If you have nothing but pure constructive criticism then you shouldn't worry about what other people think, it isn't your fault they aren't literate; usually literate and intelligent people will notice that and correct it by +. Also if you have words like "wtf" or "sh*t" or any cursing then it is your fault since you aren't able to state your opinion without having to emphasize with unnecessary words. Finally the only reason a lot of people would like to see who karma'd them down is so they can give vengeance, and don't excuse yourself by trying to say "you will only want to report the troll.", because we all know the Mod DB team is busy enough and I rather have them working on Mod DB, Indie DB, and Desura, then rather chasing and banning hundreds of "trolls" (may or may not be). Overall the system is perfectly fine as is, of course there could be adjustments elsewhere that would be greatly appreciated :D

Well, to be honest...I think this is a horrible idea. (No offense) Because, knowing internet people, I'm guessing that at least 70% of the people who -ever- get negative karma will just go to the profile of who did it, and begin marking things down, or looking for reasons to mark him/her down. ESPECIALLY if the original actually is a jerk and posted a stupid comment.

I don't waste my time doing that. Guess I'm part of the other 30%. :D

Not a problem cuz an admin can follow the karma trail and ban both of them.

It is a problem, admins don't have the time to be constantly banning offenders.
