I don't see a lot of people talking about this.

Thoughts?
If this goes to the extent of what I'm thinking it will, this is going to be a serious issue.

"If this law passes, sites like Tumblr and Facebook could be shut down"

Okay I'm all for it

Ha! If that law passes, those sites won't shut down, they'll just move to countries with sensible laws. Good news for Europe, Asia etc :D

This would be all in-traffic and out-traffic for America, so even if the sites did move we would still be left in the dark.

Moddb (at least the mods) uses a lot of 'copyrighted' material, I guess that means I'd be cut off from here for sure.

Don't worry, it will never pass for this very reason, or if it does sneak through it won't last long. The minute they figure that jobs (if not entire companies) are moving overseas it will be canned.

Although it is good to see this kind of positivity, I think we should be very worried. American bureaucrats are notoriously idiotic and too little too late should not be acceptable here. To me this is more important than "terrorism". We would literally be cut off from the entire world due to this kind of garbage. Hopefully this will not be the case.

The uk has been trying to get some simmilar laws in place allowing them to shut down sites with "copywrited material" without warning, its sounding simmilar to the chineese govts. way of handling things. I think we need a better way to deal with copywrited content than just shutting it down and hoping noone saw it.

I thought the whole proposition was a bit incredible to be honest. The great firewall of China has nothing on this.

If you have something to say that's negative about the government say it now before its too late.

Ah, censorship. Has its place, but is a fraught place indeed.

Its sad that the entertainment industry believes that this is the end all solution to their problems but they fail to realize that its their fault alone for not embracing the new technologies of the world and advancing with them properly instead of trying to live and operate like its the past. And now we could be imprisoned for their shortcomings.... I see something VERY wrong with this. Also the US government prolly has a huge boner over the possabilities this bill would offer...making it easier for them to censor the internet completely one day. The internet is the last thing in our "free" world that makes it free.....fight for it people.

People on the Right are often in support of internet censorship because they believe all manner of nasty wickedness is being perpetrated. Funny thing is, that attitude has a degree of logic - just not enough to justify treating the entire population like convicted paedophiles.

Voters on the right, maybe. The guys in office pushing the bill are probably doing it for their own benefit like ambershee suggested.

It makes me sick, I think it is bs and the men who are proposing this stuff push it as job protections bills:
Judiciary.house.gov

see:
Judiciary.house.gov

just make me rage every time I read it.

Anti-SOPA/Pro-Freedom of Speech group anyone? I think the worst part of this is that many Americans are not even aware this kind of thing is taking place in our country. I'm sure most would support it seeing as it is portrayed as a "pirate stopper". However I think the GP (general public) is SO lacking in the technology aspect of education, that we are basically eff'ed either way.

The UK have been trying to pass similar laws here for a while. nothing has come of it yet afaik but that can always change. the majority of the world seem to be imbeciles, and its the majority that get their way.

It isn't the elites or some bs secret society that takes away our rights, it is the well meaning idiots who are all about this stuff and support is. Seriously look at the lot backing this with the letters. Workers unions and crap.. this is why I hate unions, they don't give a person a voice, they take yours away and say they speak for you!

Isn't England the country that co-owns the big scary Skyne-- I mean supercomputer? I recall a bill in England from a few years ago, trying to give MI5 the right to store and access everyone's email.
