Slick2D is a simple set of tools wrapped around the LWJGL OpenGL binding for Java. It's aims are as follows:

* Provide a simple 2D API
* Make transition from Java2D to OpenGL easier
* Enable distribution via WebStart without the complexity
* Provide the tools required for most simple games out of the box
* Extensible framework for flexibility
* Mix and Match - you use what you want, nothing is enforced.
* Help with rendering, sound, input, collision and anything else we can think of.

Here are some things we're explicitly not doing and why:

* Abstracting the rendering method (i.e. Java2D or OpenGL). With the advent of LWJGL Applets, it's a waste of time and just makes things more complicated.
* Take over your development - where would the fun be if the library just forced you to do everything it's way?
* Fix everything - there will always be challenges in games development.
* Move to 3D eventually.

About Robbin' Goblin with 0 comments by Sora_ on Jun 28th, 2014

“…The Plains of what is now called Uf Sagam were once a desolate place, where no man, goblin, or other creature of this world dared to venture, in their right minds. For many a tale was spun, about the muffled screams that disturb the peace of the night; of how the bodies of the wretched souls who do get caught, have their very souls sucked out of them. Some even whisper of something unimaginable moving through the tall grass, that is said to be death incarnate. But there stood one man who decided to reclaim this part of the area from the wilderness, for the sake of man becoming the true rulers of the land. The capital city, Soravof, was still just a Fortress; plans of expanding it were still being prepared. During this time was that tales of a great beast, hiding in the tall grass of those plains was the source of the taint, that preyed upon all those who were brave or foolhardy enough to enter his realm. As it happened, these very same tales came to rest upon Master Ufgam’s desk; an order from the King himself, that he was given the honor to carry out His Majesty’s will, and reclaim those lands, for the good of humanity…”

I loved this as a beginning library for developing in Java. It makes quick and simple development easy. And its built in compatibility with Tiled makes it so much easier to build that tiled map Platformer!
