Slick2D is a simple set of tools wrapped around the LWJGL OpenGL binding for Java. It's aims are as follows:

* Provide a simple 2D API
* Make transition from Java2D to OpenGL easier
* Enable distribution via WebStart without the complexity
* Provide the tools required for most simple games out of the box
* Extensible framework for flexibility
* Mix and Match - you use what you want, nothing is enforced.
* Help with rendering, sound, input, collision and anything else we can think of.

Here are some things we're explicitly not doing and why:

* Abstracting the rendering method (i.e. Java2D or OpenGL). With the advent of LWJGL Applets, it's a waste of time and just makes things more complicated.
* Take over your development - where would the fun be if the library just forced you to do everything it's way?
* Fix everything - there will always be challenges in games development.
* Move to 3D eventually.

About The Madness Of Little Emma with 0 comments by hugeowl on Jun 1st, 2015

Hello Community,

After releasing our demo few days ago I have received quite a bit of good ideas regarding the game feel and flow. Most of those ideas is implemented in the new release of Emma's demo.

Reworked Bullet Physics

The way the player fires bullets is completely changed right now. Previously player's bullets were affected by gravity, which made aiming feel very uncomfortable. I have decided to change them, so that basic bullets fly in a straight line up to a specified max range. I have also increased bullet size significantly (both for Emma and enemies). The result is much more fun experience:

Emma shooting bees

Reworked Jump Physics

Jumps are now much more responsive, Emma falls faster, which feels more natural.

Bombs no longer are fired into distance, even though it looks like a 'nerf' in reality it makes using bombs easier and more consistent.

Spikes which get instantly activated by stepping on them are more visible and clear at first glance now - their tip is visible in the holes as a warning.

The new version for Linux, Mac and Windows is available in the download section. If anyone is interested in FreeBSD, OpenBSD or a Solaris package, please let me know and I will prepare and upload it as well.

I loved this as a beginning library for developing in Java. It makes quick and simple development easy. And its built in compatibility with Tiled makes it so much easier to build that tiled map Platformer!
