I want to start this off by saying: Thank you all for your support over the years. It's been an absolutely amazing experience for all of us here at GearDev to watch our fan base grow as it did, and it warms our hearts to see people still commenting on our ModDB all these years later.
City 17 has always been about giving what we can to the community; and while I'm sorry to say that we were not able to deliver our game on time, I can now happily say that we won't go quietly either.
As of today City 17 is now completely open source and the entire mod folder is now available for download on ModDB.
I am afraid that the years have not been kind to the mod and Steampipe has effectively broken this build. That being said, the content of the mod and it's source code is free for anyone to use or modify in their personal or SourceMod projects. Who knows; someone may even build the source and get it running once more.
You may download the source code here at this link. This link also goes over in great detail how City 17 was born, what we intended for it, and why we could no longer dedicate time to finishing this mod. There's also a great look at some never before seen content -- check it out.
Once again thank you all for the years of support. It's been a wild ride.
I'm sure there's a guide on how to fix it despite the steampipe update.

There may have been some anti-leaking tech built in, and things like FaceAPI required pre-installed libraries.
You have the full source code, so I'm positive it can be fixed if someone has a couple hours to give. I'll most likely be pushing commits to GitHub to clean these things up over the coming weeks.
I've gone ahead and completely removed the anti-leak checks from github. If someone builds it and fixes gameinfo.txt the mod should work w/ FaceAPI libraries installed.
sad to hear that, wish you good luck in the future.
If the gameinfo.txt needs a general fix I think you could get it along with this download.

Lovely, What a kind gift to the community! +Respect!
Thank you!
(And thanks for the nice clean-up on this article)
This is also one of the main reasons why i stopped working with Valve/Source. Its is BY FAR the most unfriendly company concerning modders, and this while the modding community is one of the big reasons why HL(2) is so popular. Just have to say it again, have modded with a dozen games but never have i seen a engine/editor that is so badly contained over time!
A real shame!

Makes sense seeing all machinima creators, devs and modders giving source engine a pass. Because it's dated, old and desperately needs an update, but until then we better stick with other engines that are much more advanced like UE4 or Unity, just to name a few.
Same reason NovaCor never saw a release...Source *shakes fist at Gaben*
Awesome and sad at the same time.
I always wondered what happened to this beauty of a mod. Sad to see it ceased development but I'm also glad you decided to share what you had built :)
Wish I would have known you needed more voice actors, would have loved to help but I understand that life gets in the way of personal projects. Thanks for some great years guys!
I still have my mouse mat I won in a contest from you guys. A tremendous shame that development is ceasing but at least something good came from it.
Good luck with the future.
Isn't there at least some kind of playable demo showcasing the technology at work here?
I'd love to see those incredible graphics come out of the source engine on my own screen.
Even if it's just a graphical mod for the original campaign.
it's a real shame. I do have a thing for the source engine. It hurts me to read about how unsupportive it can be to modders.
Such a Shame Valve Killed this by Releasing Pointless Update for the Source Engine & SDK.
At least you Guys Released what you've made back then which is a Good Thing. :)
Yes. I only wish every single modding team would care about their fan base as much as those guys did. It's depressing to watch promising projects simply vanish in the silence of indifference
Well, to be honest I was skeptical that this mod would see a release. Granted it's very beautiful and I was looking forward to it, but it kinda felt like too much effort for such a niche part of the Half-Life 2 universe. I guess it would have made the release of this mod even more special if it did came out.
Sadly to hear, really sad.
Well it's sad to see this mod shut down, valve messed things up so much it's wonder anyone can mod half-life 2 anymore. Thanks for sharing the source.
Please, I need a step by step to install City 17 mod. Thanks in advance
