Kuat's alternative answer to the 5th Fleet's navy, the KDY Republic Class.
While The New Republic urged ship building worlds to participate in the New Modernization program, an initiative that constructed warships out of modular sections for quicker repairs, some worlds that were capable of mass production of star ships also offered their own unique vessels. The 'Republic Cruiser', was Kuat's answer to a mass produced warship that could easily be made at the KDY ring complex. Moderately fast, and heavy firepower made the vessel an incredible strike unit capable of dealing tremendous damage to ships much larger in size. The ship was armed with 2 heavy flank mounted proton torpedo launch tubes, 3 heavy ion cannons, 5 heavy quad turbolasers, 8 imperial dual heavy lasers and 21 medium turbolasers giving it an incredible amount of firepower. The Republic also feature a ventral main hangar with 2 separate working bays and a top mounted quick launch deck to allow carrying 2 squadrons of A9 Vigilance Interceptors and Y-Wing Bomber Squadron.
While the ship was fast and cheap to produce, it's mass production suffered the consequences of weak shields and thin armor, despite the additional fitting of heavy armored plates to help protect the hollowed mid section hangar module.
Although these drawbacks contributed heavily to high loss rates during the war, Kuat kept churning out new vessels of this type to fill the ranks of the battered New Republic Navy, despite the reluctance of the crews to want to operate them.

awesome! Is the mid part a hanger? is that why it looks so odd in the bottom-middle? Otherwise great ship.
yes, there is a whole in the bottom of the ship, that then branches off to a left and a right side hangar, each with their own forcefield shields. This can be seen in the video. On the top side is the quick launch hangar bay also.

Is it just me or the Republic looks kinda like an oversized Strike-class medium cruiser?
It does remind me of it a little bit, yes, must be the curves on the front and center "pieces". The bridge also rings some bells, but it looks really great anyways :D
Thought the same. At least viewed from above the "tied up" looking segments seem similar.
Probably just a seasonal trend among ship engineers in the galaxy far, far away.
Modular design, or designing ships in segments or shared parts allows for faster construction and easier repair, but also tends to be weaker in terms of hull strength.
Unlike the NR 5th fleet which is modular design also, the KDY Republic lacks strong shielding which the 5th Fleet ships benefit form. This causes the KDY Republic to be a bit more fragile than other ships of a similar size (weak shields, moderate armor).
For comparison, the Mon Cal cruisers have moderate armor, but strong shields. The New Republic 5th Fleet has weak armor, but strong shields, the Star Destroyer and Sorusuub Dauntless has strong armor and moderate shields and the Hutts have weak shields/heavy armor.

And now that I've looked at it more, it looks like a competitor to the Proficient-class cruiser.
So there's a Republic class Heavy cruiser and a Republic class Star Destroyer? Interesting. Never knew about the cruiser.
