Lenin was not really the bad guy, Stalin was the one who invented the Gulag. Lenin tried to warn others of Stalin growing power, but he died, and failed. The communists might have executed many civilians, but it was necessary at the time to maintain order in the revolution. Lenin wanted everything perfect, not for him, but for everyone. ( i'm not communist )
