Description

Entering service soon after the Stalker in the early 24th Century, the Th'lar-class cruiser is the Klingon Empire's chief field repair cruiser, charged with patching the battle-damaged hulls of the KDF's warships on the move, and thus ensuring that Klingon campaigns maintain as much momentum as possible for as long as possible. As the Klingon fleet prefers to keep the enemy on the defensive, the time spent making repairs must be kept as short as possible, and thus the Th'lar's role in the fleet is vital.

The Th'lar was launched at a time when the KDF chose to rely on its fleet of Birds of Prey, neglecting the roles of larger cruisers in the fleet. This lack of regard for larger warships is reflected in the Th'lar, which is often felt to be under-developed by Klingon engineers. While faster than its lumbering sister, the Stalker, the Th'lar lacks any torpedo armament - an odd oversight indeed for a Klingon warship of its size. Despite this, however, the Th'lar's beam and pulse disruptors are often modified by their crews to bring it closer to the standards of a Klingon warship. That said, the Th'lar is still undeniably a warship, and with the modifications to its initially mundane weapons systems complete it can lay down blistering volleys of disruptor fire.

Vital though the Th'lar's role may be, these ships are not seen as particularly desirable postings for Klingon warriors eager for combat. As such, they are crewed by a selection of skilled engineers who must endure being supported by brave but untested auxiliaries unsuited to manning the Empire's heavier warships. Fortunately, these auxiliaries are entrusted only with the operation of the Th'lar itself while the engineers focus on operating the repair drones that the Th'lar deploys to enact repairs on battered Klingon ships, even in the midst of battle.
