R.E.A.R.M. - "Rearmament Expansion And Redesign Mod" is an unofficial Homeworld 2 expansion and it adds number of new interesting and various units.
For some people 10 letters weren't enough, so if you're one of them, this is for you. You can choose between 10 large and 24 small.
Also, there's obviosly a limit for how many times you can use each letter, those are subsystems so you can only have a certain number of them. I've increased it from 3 sets to 4, so each small letter is there 4 times now.
So do you want to name motherships and carriers as well, under condition that I'll put sensors under modules? Or better not?
Right now when the system is done, it's actually pretty easy to use it for other ships, much easier than doing the naming thing for Vaygr.
Carriers would be nice... (as if the whole expansion wasn't nice enough already hehe)
I would realy like to name Carriers. They tend to be the longest living units in my fleet so why not name them?
Yes, Carriers will be nameable now.
Woot, 24 now! Me like.
Almost enough to write pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis
.
.
Okay maybe not... it is 45 letters, and there's certainly more than 4 o's in there
The process of "typing" is in fact pretty slow, so I personally wouldn't want to call my ship "pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis" :) (yeah, copy&paste), but if this isn't just a joke and you'd really like to have 45 characters long names, you can really have them. It just won't be me who'll do it. Find me someone who's willing to rename and process about more than 100 of subsystems (very simple work -everyone can do it, very time consuming -no one would want to do it) and you can really have as long names as you want.
I'm just joking.
I thought so, but on relicnews there really were some people suggesting really long names. And I'm just saying it's not that big problem.
That much work could easily be automated for someone who's good at, say, python or another fast-code-to-result language. Just saying - 'caus I myself wouldn't want that. 24 letters is more than enough for pretty much any name I would ever consider war-worthy (since anything longer would just look silly as a military craft name to me), though deeper instancing might be useful.
I'd dance the steps myself, but I'm not really good enough in python yet to come up with something stable in a reasonable amount of time. At the moment, it'd take me less time doing it manually than writing the python code ;)
Ha, very nice!
And the apostrophe is good too.
Sensors under Modules would be fine for me; there's only a few of them anyway, if that's the price to have some GSV names for my Carriers and MS.
:)
Damn fine work Pouk!
But really, I was pretty stoked with even 'just' ten characters. ;)
Ok I'll do it, I'll put sensors under modules so even production ships can have names.
I was in fact searching for some Culture names I could use to present this update, but since I don't know more about it I dropped the idea.
But this is actually the first time in years when I'm tempted to read a book.
(what I just said won't make sense to a lot of people)
One can always quickly go over the heros, villains, and dieties of past and current cultures. Gilgamesh, Hercules, Bao Gong, Pandora, Anubis, Excalibur, etc.
My favourite Culture Ship name that is short enough to fit right now is the (Torturer-Class Rapid Offensive Unit) "Killing Time".
I like the pun, and it fits what I'm doing most of the time. ;)
The 'Affront' ship; "Kiss The Blade" should just fit if I've counted correctly, and was always another fav.
That other guy posted this link earlier, but here you go again;
En.wikipedia.org(The_Culture)
(bah, I didn't link that very well, scroll down to the bottom of the List...)
Dur, I had the 14 characters number in my head for some reason, even with all the 10's being mentioned.
"Killing time" is ingenious.
Banks is a very ingenious guy ;)
Nice job, Pouk ! (Nebo bych měl spíš říct Dobrá práce Pouku !) XD
Další čech, rád tě tu vidím.
Thanks.
About the name for the new race, i got one:
Norua: en.wiktionary.org/wiki/norua
Sounds like a good name, since they came at short counts.
About the pic, nice add!
Norua sounds nice and it's pretty fitting, but the time for the new name suggestions passed a while ago.
Hey Pouk, probably dont remeber me, i got banned on relic news...I was wondering, would you complain if i did the same thing for the registry's for my star trek mod?
I do remember you.
When it comes to mod I'm definitelly not as generous as everyone else, I'm one of the most protective people when it comes to ideas, concepts and models, it's well known fact about me. It's not a high point of my personality, but at least I'm honest about it. So obviously I wouldn't be happy, but there's actually nothing preventing you to do the same thing, you only can't use any of my subsystems, textures, icons and codes, you have to do it yourself.
Holy crap pouk! I go away for a few weeks and you come up with something crazy like this! Really, really ingenious! So simple...
Thumbs up as ever :)
Yea we were all blown away, he kept it secret squirrel too, amazing. :)
or just go looking through alot of the star wars books and right down various ship names. or use wookieepdia. i used mostly actual ship names in Star Wars: Rebellion. used some star trek names too
'Just' from this feature, I get the feeling that we'll all be able to bring a little taste of our own personal favourite sci-fi Universe to HW2.
Be it good old Star Wars, Trek, BSG or whatever floats your boat.
I'm looking forward to making my own little Iain Bank's inspired Culture Universe in REARM; Carriers pretending to be GSV's, BC's pretending to be GCU's, Destroyers (with extra engines) masquerading as ROU's, etc.
Yeah that's right, something is telling me that this is going to be a common way to name your ships, sets of names from other universes.
It may be a bit silly, but I'm already thinking that just by naming each ship, I'll want to protect it a lot more, conserve it and retain it.
It won't just be 'random BC hotkey-3' anymore; it'll be the 'Killing Time', and I'll remember when it was instrumental in taking out that pesky Frigate fleet.
I'll repair it if need be, and send it forth unto the breach once more.
And if it survives to see; "Your Fleet Is Victorious", I'll have a little warm feeling in my heart.
Thanks again Pouk.
Yes, that is exactly what I wanted to achieve, to make your ships really yours. It's a so tiny detail this feature, it may never be used, but this simple power of name makes the difference between any ship and your ship, between anonymity and caring.
Right now you can recognize each BC just by it's subsystems and it might work, but if you're constantly sending your anonymouse ships into battle, you can't ever be surprised by the fact that your very first Battlecruiser miraculously survived for the whole game, if nothing else you can at least give then serial numbers and keep a track on them.
Take a whole different game, a good old Worms (Worms II, Armagedon, World pardy, 3D...), it would never be the same game if the each worm would have been nameless. This game sounds like a stupid and irrelevant example, but it isn't, because it were your worms which died and drown so the rest could keep fighting. (I also remembered the Planescape Torment game and the whole topic about the power of names.)
And only now I'm starting to realise that even some people may not even notice, for someone else it may mean a whole new level of experience. Maybe not for many people, but if at least someone will have his own amazing war stories just because he named his ship, it was worth it.
I don't know if HW2's engine could be made to support 'Veterancy', but maybe this is the closest we'll ever get, and I love it.
It does, I think Complex and PtV have some changes based on kill counts.
And I'm certainly not finished, this is one of the three main concepts I had to support the ship customization (not literally but the closest word I get), this was just the only one I knew how to do... :)
Excellent. I can't really remember Complex; it didn't get loaded onto my new pc, and I only intend to install PtoV 'when it's done' (nudge nudge MoLoLu ;) so I wouldn't know, but this sounds very tantalizing. :)
Also an idea raised by your "Killing time": If you want to give your ships a personality, why don't name them only after first action: "Lucky bastard", "Killer of defenseless" or "Three against one", something like this, literally earning the names.
I like that idea, I'll use that too I think.
"Lone Wolf" BC may be one of the first though. :)
As you said, even just simple serial numbers would make a difference;
001 survived, sadly 002 thru 007 did not.
(Oh! 007! Bond ship! Ok, that one will have to live). :P
Nice!!! i am going to name my battlecruser: wimp ship!!!
why not
"Scourge of Space", "HyperWimp", "BOOM", "Zzzaap"-
aaargh! My brain is exploding with possibilities!
"REARM RULZ" Hahahahahaha :)
(BC .1) "Shoot Here"
(BC .2) "Missed Us"
Oh gawd I gotta stop....
I like "Shoot here".
You don't want to know the first few things I'll name my ships.
But I do have at least a dozen ideas that I'll show once I get my hands on the mod. --Don't want to spoil it ;)
:)
"Gunboat Diplomat" is another Bank's one I intend to abuse,
along with "Lapsed Pacifist".
The more ironic the better for me.
I was looking at one of the pics and i was thinking, and idea actualy , a big ship to make on the spot but you gotta produce each individual component and bring them to a meeting point and there special can only be activated when you select them all, wich will start the assembly of the ship, this will be very hard to make but it can be a refreshing idea for the game
Howdy Ghostkiller555,
These comments are pretty easy to over-look, if you want to make sure Pouk actually sees your suggestion, try hitting up the Ship Suggestion thread in the 'Forum' section here, or even over at the dedicated REARM thread at RnF. :)
Definitelly usefull at least for the Kadeshi Needleship. But I'll have to ask somebody who can script for the technical realisation.
This is actually... possible! You could use a docking system like the way my drones dock in PTV and yadda yadda.
However it would be a real pain to implement as there would be so many combinations you'd have to get right and then make a new ship for every combination of 'bits' that you could stick together. Well, that and you'd need a way for the AI to handle that.
That minor inconvenience aside, it would be pretty damn awesome!
Interesting Mololu.
I know naming the ships made star wars rebellion so much more fun, though it did get hard coming up with names once you start getting into the 1,000 range of ships. i had to start looking up online and in the dictionary. i think at some point i started using U.S. Navy ship names.
