Table of Contents

1 What is EvitToys?

it's a 3D educational video game for children, to learn about danger of landmines
and cluster munitions, by playing inside a virtual world and learning to recognize them and avoid them.
the child will also learn signs that indicate dangerous area. Which make the child adopt safe behaviour
when faced with similar situation in real life.
I hope through playing and learning with this software, it will contribute to saving children life in countries affected by war.
more details about educational theory behind it here:
Olpc-maroc.blogspot.com

2 How to play

2.1 Navigation

You can navigate through the virtual world by using keyboard arrow keys and mouse:

LEFT KEYSlide left
RIGHT KEYSlide right
SPACE KEYJump up
MOUSEUse mouse to choose a direction

2.2 Buttons and doors

Some doors are closed, to open them and access new areas, you need to press red button near the door.

2.3 Unexploded ordnance and mines

To progress in the game and discover new secret areas, you need to avoid getting near mines because they explode
and will hurt you. you can avoid them by watching them closely in the museum, and by staying away when you see danger sign.

2.4 The museum

is found in beginning of the game, it is the only safe place where the child can get close to mines and see them and remember their shape
as he need to avoid getting near them later in the game.

2.5 Purple diamond

You need to collect all purple diamond that you can find, every one give you more health and help you to survive and continue playing.
the diamond is only thing you need to collect in the game and being choosed as color purple is rarely used in military on in nature and
shape cannot be confused with explosives. so the child will not look for them or confuse them with dangerous object in real life .

It's not mentioned in the help but you need to type in "map level1" to get it to start. Also, it's missing "progs/flame0.mdl". I just took flame2.mdl & copied/renamed it.

I'm doing the dev under Linux maybe on windows there is a bug as it should begin with main map "start" without typing "map start".
level1 was not for playing it's just a small level for experimenting..

Good idea, indeed.

I see only one problem: sometimes it's hard to see what form the object has, which is probably one of the most important things in this mod. (for example: Moddb.com).

Can you make borders (like black lines) in the texture so it'll be easier to recognize where the edges are and what is the form of the object/mine? It probably should look like a little like wireframe (https://www.moddb.com/mods/evil-toys/images/various-3d-models-of-mines#imagebox), but without many of the lines that are not important.

Thanks for pointing that, actually those pictures are just concept art and displayed in wireframes to show how they are modeled, but they are not shown in that way inside the game... I'll upload more screenshots

Wow, a pretty good idea. Will you be sending it anyone in particular, like charities or organisations in the countries?
UNICEF and War Child International come to mind.

Good idea, I didn't know about War Child International, but I prefer to advance more in the project and write a more detailed game design document to convince them. There is also MAG, HALO Trust humanitarian landmine clearance agency

Project Features:

* Evit Toys is a non violent game based on a heavily modified version of Quake 1 First Person shooter En.wikipedia.org
* The game has been designed to work on old computers commonly found in third world countries which are the most affected by landmines. So don't expect a lot of fancy graphics effects or other "distractions" as the game is designed to do one thing and do it well.
* Don't need latest graphic card to play, in fact it can work even without one, like on the One Laptop per Child XO laptop (tested on model version 1 and 1.5).
* All images, 3D models, tools and game source code will be released acoording to terms of GPL 2.0 license along with documentation on how to modify/adapt the game to your needs.
* The game will be free of charge and available for download for Linux, OLPC laptop and windows.
