Alien Armageddon is getting its biggest update yet! Version 4.0 is releasing on April 19th, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Duke Nukem 3D.

  • NEW! Attrition game mode.
    • Battle through a random sequence of some of the best community maps, gaining levels and upgrades as you progress.
    • Enemies will get more powerful, too, culminating in an epic boss fight.
    • With randomized enemies and almost 200 maps to draw from, Attrition is a new experience every time.
    • Start a new game, select New Episodes then the War of Attrition episode to play.

  • Enemies have been overhauled with new art and abilities. There are some new enemy types, too.
  • The portable vendor is now standard issue, and you can buy a much larger variety of weapon upgrades and perks with the coins you earn from slaying enemies.

  • New NPCs and details have been added to previously released episodes, including the originals from 1996. Older episodes will now feature some enemy randomization and the player progression features from Attrition mode.
  • The Space Gladiators episode has been partially remixed/rebalanced and includes two new maps replacing weaker matches.
  • The New Invasion episodes now kicks off with a new map featuring Bombshell in an EDF base under siege.
  • More costume choices for Duke and Bombshell, now selectable with a variety of colors from the in-game character menu.

I do have to wonder if anyone sat down to playtest this. There seem to be some very obvious issues in flow and gameplay mechanics.

Maybe if you pay me, I'll forward them to you.

I respect your opinion by the way and we regularly talk about gameplay mechanics on our discord. I'm generally pretty good about making changes when warranted, although the Attrition gameplay (when XP mode is on) is deliberately rough around the edges with random difficulty spikes.

Open the script file AAUSER.CON in a text editor and the options you want are near the top. Do not change the autosave option though unless you have the latest code update. By the way what you are calling "damage numbers" is not damage, it is the XP you get for killing a monster and it is tied to the progression system, so you can also turn that whole thing off with the XP MODE button that is already in the GUI when you start a game.

This is good but I can't give it top marks. Yes it's an improvement over the last one, but I don't think the people who did this had epilepsy users (me being one of them) in mind when they did this. You change weapon, it flashes. You save a person from a pod, it flashes. An octabrain does a close attack on you, it flashes. I don't think I need to go on. I'm going to have to give this an 8 maybe 8.5 out of 10, because you've made it nearly impossible for epilepsy users to enjoy this without having a seizure and a trip to a hospital. I nearly had a seizure myself playing this.

Hello, if you check out the updated code, I have just modified the civilian rescue effect so it does a fadeout instead of flashing. I hope that helps.

The other things you mentioned have been there since previous versions and are not easily addressed. What you are calling flashing on weapon change is really just a weapon icon in the hud being highlighted to show the player what weapon is being switched to. Yes, there is a version of the octabrain that flashes the screen and it's supposed to be annoying... Its not our intention to cause anyone distress.

The fade out effect was great, perfect. It's the blue octabrain and the rangers that are the biggest headache for me. The standard octabrain's attack is fine, but the there's something in the blue octabrain's that disagrees with me, it could be a texture, script animation or even frame rate. The Ranger's Electrogun needs adjusting too as it gave me a headache too. I had another play last night and I had to quit on the Toxic dump level of LA Meltdown. I'm not trying to be picky fussing or nagging, I want to help you get this right and I'm doing it at my own personal risk. I understand what it's like as I do 3d art on Blender meself, so trust me I DO understand.

Don't hurt yourself. The octabrains will probably have a different projectile sprite altogether at some point (I've never been a fan of it). But as for the ranger's attack and anything else... you would probably have to put together your own art replacement pack. If you did so I would happily put it up as an optional download if the quality is high. But right now we have already moved on into developing the next story episode so zero time is being devoted to existing art for the time being.

I like the war of attrition mode but there is a lack of ammo when the game put it more difficult. I'm level 7 and I don't have ammo to still fightining because it's impossible with only foots so I have to cheat a shame.

Hey, big fan of your project, but whoever decided that the EDF base map should have a constant alarm droning throughout the entire level made a seriously questionable design choice.

Same. Reminds me of the first level on the Brutal Doom "Hell on Earth" map pack. Klaxons wailing the entire level.

You can shoot the alarm sprites and they will stop. Maybe you get a special achievement for shooting them all. Then again, maybe you don't.

A great retro experience that expands upon the base gameplay formula without going too far off. The co-op AI is well implemented and fun (as well as nearly optional for those who don't want it), and Bombshell is a simplistic yet incredibly enjoyable character through her voice lines and original arsenal.
