Alien Armageddon is the premier mod for Duke 3D and we are closing out 2022 with another awesome update! On December 4th we are releasing version 4.65, which includes all previous content plus some new features and fixes.

AA4 3ratio

Here is a quick list of what Alien Armageddon includes:

  • All the old episodes of Duke 3D, enhanced with new voxels and other decor, as well as remade enemies, plus new enemies exclusive to AA, and a selection of fresh weapons and other equipment.
  • Our own enhanced versions of the two best Duke 3D expansions.
  • Three of our own singleplayer campaigns: New Invasion, Space Gladiators, and Resistance, all including huge detailed levels with lots of action.
  • A randomized campaign option called War of Attrition, where you can play through a random sequence of the best levels ever made for Duke 3D -- there are literally hundreds of maps.
  • Three fully playable characters: Duke Nukem, Bombshell, and Wes Wolf. Each character has their own unique weapons, abilities and upgrades. You can play the campaigns solo, or you can use two characters and swap control between them while the other one is controlled by AI.
  • An in-game vendor system for purchasing upgrades to weapons and inventory items, as well as a selection of perks.
  • The player characters as well as enemies have a leveling system. Your health and damage go up with levels. So do your weapons -- each weapon slot has its own XP bar. But watch out, enemies become higher level as you advance and they have a large pool of random traits that they can spawn with.
  • Many new fully animated NPCs to populate the game world. And you can rescue civilians in distress, for a small reward.
  • As of version 4.65, there is an in-game options menu accessible via the portable vendor where you can toggle and change various game options on the fly, such as difficulty, cosmetics, and even whether the levels are mirrored.

Oh...my...freaking...Duke

This "mod" is one of the greatest things I've ever experienced. Such detailed environments and large maps, just brimming with creativity. Took me an hour or two hours to finish each map on first time(I've only beaten first two of the first new episode so far). All the guns look and feel badass, and I love the progression system/store. There's something oddly satisfying about all those coins flying out of enemies you kill, like it's a form of gibbitude. Picking up the coins reminds of playing Lego games as a kid and collecting those colored studs. I was a bit skeptical of how the a.i. partner would work, but thankfully once you team up together, the number of big enemies on screen becomes just right, too much for you to handle alone but just right for the two of you together.

I was a little concerned after the first level, since that was pretty linear, albeit in a Half-Life sort of way. However any minute fears were assuaged by the next level, which is a sprawling city, partially bombed out, and filled with interweaving passageways. Totally non-linear, and like the original Duke 3D levels.

I love the little details, like the not-Red Bull even getting its own entire commercial on one of the tv screens, or pressing use on a whiteboard to actually write out what you want for supper. Being able to buy soda or snacks, or conversely just shooting the machine and having a bunch fall out is so cool--the sort of thing I think we were looking forward to in the doomed vision of Duke Forever.

This really doesn't feel like a mod. It feels like a brand new Duke Nukem game, the kind they'd never release officially. This is the Duke Nukem reality I think everyone imagined and hoped Duke Forever would be. Ion Fury, the recent release by 3D Realms was great, but holy cow this blows that away just in terms of weapons, let alone upgrades, alt fires, perks, multiple characters, ai co-op, RPG-style level up system, environment interaction.

Wow, just wow. Moddb's been bugging me for a few days to vote for something to be "Mod of the Year 2022." Thanks for making that choice real easy for me. And thanks for making such a wonderful experience--I can't wait to play the rest of it!

Thank you for your kind words. We strive to make a game that we ourselves want to play, and it is gratifying to find an audience for it. The best of Alien Armageddon is yet to come. Also, I don't know if AA will be mod of the year, but I nominate your comment as Post of the Year :-)
