The fiercely independent spirit of the Free Marches has given rise to countless famous, but more often, infamous, mercenary companies throughout the history of the region. Many of these men are former City Guard who deserted, mutinied, or were discharged for corruption and scandals. Others are dangerous criminals who fled from one of the Free Marches' many cities, and some are simply honest mercenaries who know no better way to make coin than by being a hired sword. Sellswords often see a steady flow of coin into their pockets from the many contracts they recieve from desperate City-States and nobles seeking to raise a quick army to either protect their interests or attack their rivals. Ironically, the foe a Sellsword most commonly faces is another Sellsword hired by the rivals of their employer; indeed, the Free Marches often sees entire armies of mercenaries clashing in bloody battles on the behalf of coin, much like Antiva to the north. The military forces of minor Free Marcher City-States are sometimes almost entirely made up of these mercenaries, who become a semi-permanent military force in time. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the "City Guard" of Wycome, Hercinia, and Ansburg are little more than glorified, uniformed and permanently hired sellswords who make up for the less-military inclined citizens of those cities.
Only one of several units made recently as the mercenaries part of the roster finishes up. Also stay tuned for yet another Faction Roster Overview planned for May! I shall leave it as a surprise until the article is written.
It's looking more polished by the day! Good luck and stay safe!
