Darkness: Source is a fast-paced, asymmetric team game where spiders and humans fight to destroy each other in order to survive. The first team to destroy all of the other team's players and spawns wins. Darkness is based on the Gloom Quake 2 mod.
I found a great piece of free software today called Open Broadcaster Software, and it helped me make some demo videos for Darkness. The video quality is decent and unlike the Source Engine's built-in demo recording tools, it properly shows bug-vision and the in-game menus.
So without further adieu, here's a quick video showing how the Engineer and Breeder classes can be used. For the Engineer, this clip shows basic construction, destruction, repair and destroy-gun jumping. For the Breeder, this clip shows hatching, eating, stacking/climbing, and using the invisible bug-glow to navigate dark areas:
Next, I made a video showing how the commando is used. It shows how to use grenades, prime and drop C4, and use the .357 Magnum and the silenced SMG:
Finally, I made a quick video showing some of the Stalker's attacks. This clip shows how to use spike grenades and shoulder-fired spikes to kill turrets, how to use a healer, and how to die while attempting to destroy turrets up-close:
Darkness 1.6, now with: Destructive Engineers, flesh eating Breeders, better weapon balance and map improvements!
I've been thinking of ways to improve the build/repair/destroy interfaces in Darkness for the last few days, and I could use some input from other players...
The beta has been very successful so far: I've fixed some bugs that I couldn't have found on my own, and I got some great feedback from players!
Ever wanted to hurl a misbehaving teammate across the room with your very own Engy Destroy Gun? Ever want to know what it's like for a Breeder to give...

I need SDKs to play it?
If you install it on Windows, Steam prompts you and then downloads the SDK automatically.
But nobody plays this anyway.
Still alive?
send me a black request and maybe ill show you my peenus if your nice enuff maddie
Hey guys, I wanted to ask a range of you if you could help me test a new map. More players the better! If you're interested let me know, hoping to test this today.
im always down to test afew things out
give me a pm when your testing :)
There appears to be something wrong with the OS X download for 1.6 . The size should be 45MB but I consistently get only 11.4KB. FWIW the 1.5 version downloads properly.
The moddb mirror might be malfunctioning, but the main site, Darkness.dnbrown.net has the same TGZ with instructions too.
About the Mac build: It runs on my system, but the crosshairs are funky and it won't let me connect to the server. I'm not sure if it's because I use a non-standard case-sensitive filesystem, but if you're able to connect and play normally, please let me know.
its because macs are stupid and overpriced.
They're a little silly sometimes, but not actually over-priced. Have you seen the new Mac Pro's? You can't buy flash storage like that very cheap, the thunderbolt bus/ports are amazing, and the video card is fairly expensive itself... If only I had 8k for a computer.
To be fairly honest.
You can easily build your own hackintosh that happens to be twice as good as the new mac pro with less than what the price tag tells you. All you need is knowledge and a reason to have it. Gaming cannot be one of them, it has never really been the purpose for Apple's mac's.
Who would have thought such wisdom could come from a 12 year old.
