Description

The Klingon fleet departs, having laid waste to Iota Geminorium IV - the Tribble homeworld.

Tribbles are (or rather, were) a species of small, furry lifeforms native to the verdant world of Iota Geminorium IV, located in a remote corner of the Klingon Empire. Despite being un-intelligent and physically defenceless, the Tribbles were well adapted to their native environment, which abounds with natural predators and harsh conditions. The Tribbles were, in fact, among the most successful lifeforms on their world, thanks entirely to an astonishing reproductive rate. Tribbles are essentially born pregnant and ready to reproduce, needing only small amounts of food in order to gather the energy to birth large litters of offspring.

The Tribbles' small size, enjoyable cooing sounds (shown to have a calming effect on most humanoids), and adorable appearance led to neutered specimens becoming popular pets across the Federation.

Yet even the Tribbles had enemies.

Tribbles were almost universally friendly, happily cooing and enjoying cuddles from virtually every species, with one notable exception. Precisely why is not fully understood, but when exposed to Klingons, Tribbles would become highly agitated, shaking violently and shrieking hysterically. The Klingons, likewise, were known to become physically uncomfortable and even distressed by the proximity of even a single Tribble, responding to their shrieks as though in inexplicable pain. The Klingon revulsion (and perhaps even fear of) Tribbles became a source of great amusement among other species - many jokes were made about how the known galaxy's most respected warrior race became panic-stricken in the face of tiny creatures that resembled hairy marshmallows, and were about half as dangerous.

Unfortunately, the Klingons took the matter far more seriously than most anticipated.
