Ages of the Federation is a new total conversion mod for Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion. This mod takes place in the Enterprise and Original series eras, focusing on the conflict between the early Federation and Klingon Empire. A resurgent Romulan Star Empire, angry and still licking its wounds after their defeat to Earth and her allies waits in the shadows, ready to take advantage of any of misstep by either the warring powers. The Xindi, new to the galactic stage are also eager to forge their own path.
USS Yorktown is immediately overwhelmed by the prototype D-7, IKS Akif.
Overtaken in the technological arms race and outmatched by the Federation's Ares-class cruisers, the Imperial Fleet Engineering Division finally pursuaded their superiors and the High Council to divert resources into the development of new ships and weapons - initiatives previously put on indefinite hold due to 'lack of urgent necessity'. The development of the next evolutionary stage of the Imperial Fleet's venerable line of battlecruisers had been underway for some time, but had been neglected by fleet commanders and stymied by politicians. Now given priority, the design and construction of the D-7 proceeded apace.
Three of the new battlecruisers were built at a secret location deep within the Empire, with the first prototype, IKS Akif, being launched for a shakedown mission in mid-2244. Its mission took it into Federation space, far enough away from the war zone to test its performance independently of the rest of the fleet, but also where, though there was a chance for combat, it was unllikely the prototype would encounter significant Starfleet forces.
In the Castor system the Akif detected a single Federation starship - the USS Yorktown, an older class of ship seemingly on a simple patrol mission. Seeing an opportunity for an easy victory and a test of the D-7's firepower, the Akif's captain allowed the ship to be detected, luring the Yorktown into the vicinity of a rocky planetoid near the system's edge.
