J-20 is the China's Answer toward the US stealth fighter F-22. The aircraft features a delta and canard design, similar to that of the Mig 1.44 from the early 2000s. However, the aircraft also features the similar air-intake design of that of F-35, and the similar nose and cockpit design of that of F-22. The aircraft is of unusually large design for a fighter, with a length of 20.3 meters (Compared to 18.9 m with F-22, 22 m with Su-30, which is longer due to its tail spike, 15.27 m of the medium fighter Rafale, and 15.06 m of lightweight F-16), a maximum take off weight of ~37 tons (Compared to the very heavy F-22's 38 ton, Su-30's 34 ton, Rafale's 24.5 ton, and F-16's 19.2 ton), and a wing area of 73 m^2 (Compared to 78 m^2 of F-22, 62 m^2 of Su-30, 45.7 m^2 of Rafale, and 27.87 of F-16),combined with large internal volume. Due to its size, it is estimated that the aircraft can carry a heavy load of internal fuel around 11 tons, which enables it to have an estimated combat radius of around 2000 km (Compared to 759 km of F-22, 1500 km of Su-30, 1852 km of Rafale, and 550 km of F-16)
Apart form the aircraft's large size and very long range, it's also worth mentioning its innovative side weapon bay design, which can swing open with a short range missile ready on launch rail, and close the bay door to retain the aircraft's aerodynamic shape and reduce radar reflection from internal parts. However, the aircraft's central weapon bay is somehow unexpectedly small, with capacity of only 4 medium or long range air-to-air missiles (possible with 6 if the missiles are smaller)
The aircraft is expected to carry advanced avionics, including AESA radar and distributed aperture system similar to that of F-35, which can generate a spherical image around the pilot in his helmet mount displays. With these aids, added with the aircraft's expected reduced RCS on par of less than that of F-35, the aircraft is likely to retain an information edge when faced with F-35, F-18E/F or F-15.
