Maybe it would be cool to do a reimagining, rather than the basic worm art style of every Dune game in the last 15 years. Especially with the worms. They were never the most intimidating looking things in the world.

And it does sort of look like a *****, as pointed out by another commenter :D

Just looking through other pieces of artwork I get the feeling i've seen all of this before (apart from the flamethrower unit). The buzzsaw type bike was in Emperor, wasn't it? Needs a direction of its own, I think.

Sorry for being negative here, but I think Dune games these days need more originality. Copying older (quite awful) games isn't exactly a model for success!

I do like that whoever writes these news updates appears familiar with the Dune books though. Nice to see people using the universe they set their game in for marketing purposes, rather than just the in game looks / theme!

I can't remember from the books whether they spin on the surface or not (I've not read Dune itself in about 5 years now), but the riders use hooks to peel back the the rings around its head, so that it cannot roll or burrow back into the sand without intense pain.

Something like that :P

sathanas - - 98 comments @ Editors Choice - Best Upcoming Indie

Has anybody done that Taylor Swift thing yet? Imma let you finish, but all the other games on this list looked more interesting and promising.

It's enough that the video has given me awareness of a couple of interesting looking Indie titles in Encore and Frozen Synapse. I couldn't quite tell what was going on with FS, but I'll be looking into it, that's for certain.

Also: Congrats to Overgrowth. While it's not exactly the most exciting looking mod, it's nice to see an award for the least flashy looking mod imaginable.

That's a screenshot from early Spore prototype? Well, when I say screenshot I mean shakeycam still, of course.

The application for me just runs as a series of white dots that you can drag around on a black background.

Was it supposed to be something else?

I like the camera work and angles in this one... but the voice acting and sound direction in general was abysmal.

crosshair 1 in console :)

It's clearly just another mistake in this supposedly 'final' release.

Got to agree about the level design, my only hope is that it gets better further in.

What was with that part with the pipes you have to jump down, and then climb the ladder to get up to the control console to let the platform across in the first level?

Why would someone construct such a thing? Health and safety would have a field day!

Level design should make sense in a real-life situation and then liberties should be taken to make it fun. If it doesn't make any sense, it feels like you're playing Mario.

I'll write up my full views when I'm through with it.

Politics DB.

Is anyone going to stop coming to Mod DB because they have a competition sponsored by a branch of the US military? If the sponsor offends you, boycott the site until they issue an apology (which will probably be never).

Or just man-up and accept that sometimes things will be associated with other things which you may not approve of. Doesn't mean you have to turn the entire news post into political bickering.

No more politics for me.

sathanas - - 98 comments @ Opposing Force 2 Developer Interview

Indeed. I wasn't trying to say that the mod should focus on superficial changes to weaponry. What I was trying to get across is when asked "Why should someone play your mod?", the answer should be more than a change to the way NPCs interact with a vehicle.

sathanas - - 98 comments @ Opposing Force 2 Developer Interview

I'm not holding out much hope for this. It's a bad sign when the Project Lead replies to "Why should people play your mod?" with a whole lot of snore about a control system for telling NPCs what to do in a vehicle. I mean really... that's why I should play the mod? Who thought that was a good answer? :S

It's like when a game lists things like "5 weapons, 12 levels, 14 different opponents" as selling points on the back of the box. You just know if that's all they can think of to sell this game to people, then just put the box down and back away slowly.

Still, good luck with this!

Boss Boss Boss Boss Strange-Building Boss?

Screens and screens4 were the only ones that seem worth posting, really. Even screens4 is poorly lit (for a competition where you're judging people on their model work?), making it hard to tell what's going on.

Good effort though, everyone!

Resistance and Liberation also has no crosshair if you're looking for that sort of thing. they use a free-aim system like in Insurgency, then a slightly more accurate free-aim, then the most accurate method is using the iron-sights.

Just heard this mentioned on Podcast 17 and came to have a look. It's looking good, I'll keep an eye on this.

sathanas - - 98 comments @ Portal: Prelude

For anyone who does not consider themselves a hardcore Portal player / speedrunner, just avoid this.

The first chamber gave me a bit of a laugh after warning me not to do stupid things with portals, and then jumping into the middle of several turrets, but after that there's really no appeal.

The story you pretty much know from what GLaDOS says during Portal, so much of the appeal of being "more than a map-pack" is lost straight away.

Perhaps it's good in French, but as someone playing through on English, the translation and voice synth programs used to create the voices just ruins any sort of atmosphere. It's like playing through with a schizophrenic GLaDOS most the time. Which would have been a cool thing if it was during the start of her meltdown, but... sadly I don't think it's intended.

Where Portal threw some challenges at you, generally it would take just a few attempts to figure something out. Rooms were clean and guided your eye to the solution to most chambers. Portal: Prelude does away with any sort of user friendliness, and even at one point makes a joke of the solution to puzzles making no logical sense. "Did you see that part of the wall I moved. It was of no use. A ha ha ha ha," that's pretty damn hilarious, you zaney frenchmen! Watch as I hold my sides to stop them from splitting.

The test chambers, from the very start, require near perfect timing and a lot of trial and error. If you enjoy repetitive pain, this will be right up your alley. Go ahead hardcore minority, tell me I'm missing the point. It's supposed to be hardcore to the max! I'm just warning the average player that they'll probably end up burning this to a dvd just so they can put it through a shredder.

3/10 for me, someone who found Portal enjoyable as it was and felt no real need to challenge myself further. If the story was any way decent or even unpredictable, it might get as high as 5 even with the state of the test chambers.

Agree completely. It sucked majorly when it was first released, but today I could not imagine Valve games without it. It's so convenient and easy.

Congrats to the Insurgency guys. Maybe now there'll be a few newbies for me to actually play against. Was no fun against the people who had been playing non-stop since day one :)

Sorry but this poll was terrible.

"Digital distribution only, I download everything else"
En.wikipedia.org

So that poll option is Digital Distribution or... Digital Distribution? :P

I had to end up picking "Only buy from a retail store", as that was the closest one to "I buy games from play.com (online retail, online store, whatever) that there was. There just aren't enough options on this poll really. What if I did all 3? Which I do. I've bought games from stores, bought them through Steam (DD), and through online retailers like play.com

Will the mod be set on the moon tomorrow? ;)

I'm not watching the mod, but from the whim-like changing of direction and then back, it seems like you're kinda losing focus on what you're doing. If you don't have the people or the purpose to make a HL2 mod, then make a C&C3 one instead. I just hope you make an awesome mod either way.

Good luck!

"USMC soldier" I thought the majority of SG teams were made of of USAF rather than USMC? No biggie, but i thought it would have made more sense to use the USAF instead.
