Half-Life: Field Intensity

Mod review may contain spoilers

Well this was a pleasant surprise, goldsource mods still pop up every now and again.

Pros:
Field intensity is as good as a classic half-life experience can get, it shows just how well goldsource can hold up when in the right hands.
-Level design and gameplay is overall pretty top notch; especially impressive considering the mods long runtime and the fact that the quality kept throughout.

Cons:
-There are a few spots where it's not clear where to go next, this issue was very present in the early chapters.
-voice acting is a big mixed bag. The commander that contacts you throughout is fine performance wise but I think he sounds a bit too young. Other custom voices are bad though, just not enough effort put into the performances making them sound rather cheesy.
-The ending did fall a bit flat for me as the last gargantua was very easy to defeat given all the weapons I had at that point.

Conclusion:
While there are points of contention (no mod or game is really perfect anyways, not even the original Half-Life) the good outweighs the bad by a significant margin. This is one of the longest Half-Life mods I've played and just about every minute was well worth it.

Half-Life : Echoes

Mod review

Using the Spirit of Half-Life tool set James Cockburn crafts one of the greatest Half-Life mods yet. The level of detail in the maps architecture is so good it will make you forget that that you are playing a 20 year old game. The gameplay is just as well crafted as the architecture; not once did I find the mod frustratingly difficult or ran into areas that dragged on. It's not often that you'll come across a mod this good, I believe a new standard for Half-Life modding has just been set.

ICE - A Half-Life 2 Expansion Pack

Mod review

The mod may have its moments but its dragged down by terrible voice acting, uninspired level design, and bizarre enemies that feel out of place and are badly animated.

Arctic Incident

Mod review

This mod was well designed and overall pretty enjoyable, it's good to see that the Half-Life modding community still has some life left in it. While enjoyable it is short, very short. Hopefully this concept gets expanded on.

They Hunger

Mod review

One of the oldest half-life mods. Hitting the scenes just a year after the classic game released. This mod isn't too terrible for its age. The level design is nice and there are some disturbing moments within as well, which for survival horror is always good to have. Though some good comes out of this mod it isn't absent of many flaws. The voice acting for instance certainly hasn't aged well. Game play wise it's decent, plenty of nice weapons to get a hold of. However the mod really starts to drag on during the later levels and even gets redundant at times. The final boss was a neat idea but I think it emphasized a bit much on trial and error.

Conclusion:
If your a hardcore fan of half-life and its modding community, than give this a try. Be prepared a for a pretty long play through.

CWC pack Initiative

Mod review

Doesn't appear to be too popular here, but I enjoyed this map pack. It isn't perfect though, there were some instances of poor map design, but there are also some pretty interesting and creative levels too.

Cleaners Adventures

Mod review

A bit short but still a great mod, I like the idea of playing as an average worker. The mod has pretty nice level design, good atmosphere, and an interesting soundtrack. I also like the inclusion of some opposing force content, not much op4 stuff is used however, just a few weapons and npc's but its still nice to see them since very few mods incorporate such content. The only other criticism I have other than its short length is that the intro could have been a bit more creative than it was. I do like the sudden occurrence of the resonance cascade but it felt kind of rushed. It would have been neat if it occurred while performing some maintenance.

Conclusion:
You won't regret downloading this mod. Its short but fun and also quite challenging.
