Displacement maps in Half-life 2 (Video)
This 17 or so minute video will walk you through using displacement maps to make hills, like the ones in the HL2 coast levels.

I am 2/3 thru the video and I had to pause and show my thanks!!!
This video is AMAZING! I thought making hilly brushes would be so hard and complex, but this, this is great!
Thanks alot! You helped me out extremely!
thanks, glad I could help someone else learn how to dis map. :)
This looks like it will help me in the future, but sadly i am not that far in learning to make maps.
I still need to learn how to make water.
LOL :)
This is really cool and to livewire117 you make water by making a brush (box) and then use a water texture on it :D
I had to say, this tutorial is amazing. I love how you explained it, it made it extremely easy to understand.
Thanks so much!!! :)
Somebody claims that using too many displacement maps will give compile errors, what do you say about this?
How come you skipped a big part of it, you skipped the part where you made the rest of the map =\
When I run this tutorial, the image never changes. and I am also unable to fast-forward, as that crashes WMP. Is there a specific codec I need? Also, the end of the file has WMP9 in it, but I'm using WMP11.. do I need 9 for it to work correctly? :/
" How come you skipped a big part of it, you skipped the part where you made the rest of the map =\"
Because I just repeated the process and saw no reason to waste time and mbs.
"Somebody claims that using too many displacement maps will give compile errors, what do you say about this?"
I have used lots of disp maps and never gotten any errors. Either they went ridiculous, or else they forgot to put a solid mesh behind their map and got an error because of that.
Thanks a lot, I'm glad it helped you :)
Thanks, this helped alot.
Great tutorial!
I'm surprised. I still get emails about this tutorial, I don't think I would have expected that it would have helped so many people when I made it 4 years ago. Thanks to all the people who have left positive comments!
